RE: NVIDIA Shield (Android TV set-top box) - etc6849 - 2015-08-10

KODI has:

Faster menu's, much better support. M$ just keeps killing off features like the WMC Netflix app, they are also doing away with Silverlight and WMC itself is not even in Windows 10. KODI keeps adding features.

I'm not stuck with an Xbox 360 as my extender as with WMC on Windows 8. Let's face it extender support under WMC sucks as no extender supports bluray ISOs.

Built in TCP control protocol is another thing WMC lacks.

I don't need to buy a software bluray player with KODI either, and the included player is much smoother than Arcsoft TMT 5 and 6 under WMC. The player just works and starts playing bluray ISOs in 2-3 seconds over the network , and has no jitter at all with the Shield.

What's lacking with the SATV though is bitstream audio and 3d support. I think both will come this year. At that point I will buy three more Shields to run KODI.

[quote='fox123' pid='2075551' dateline='1439179591can you give a little more detail of the difference between your WMC and Shield using Kodi? what is your WMC spec and how is Shield better?

Does anyone know if there is planned support for better 1080p->4k scaling options in Kodi? (e.g. Lanczos3) Even if it means no hardware acceleration......

I have a 4K Samsung TV and there is currently no way of forcing the HDMI connection to 1080p; meaning that I have to use Kodi scaling and as things stand this is a lot worse than the Samsung TV scaling. Meaning that for playback of 1080p material my ancient Patriot PBO is producing a better picture.

I've logged enhancement requests with both Nvidia and Samsung to see if they can provide enhancements to control the HDMI output (i.e. force 1080p)
However, having better scaling options in Kodi available may be the better answer!

I don't have a 4K TV so I can't test, but from what Nvidia mods have said, I thought changing the HDMI settings to Best Frame rate would change it to 1080p for 1080p content.

Unfortunately, this will probably not work for the Samsung JS8500 that I have since it supports 4k@60 meaning that "Best Frame Rate" and "Best Resolution" will both mean 4k. I believe the default is set to "Best Frame Rate" (I'll double check when I get home - no harm in trying).

Thanks

Correct. This will not work with JS8500 because all 4 HDMI ports on it support 4K@60Hz (I also have the same TV). The only way to achieve it is by routing it through an AVR/Soundbar/Splitter that doesn't support 4K@60Hz. I route it through my soundbar when I want 1080p60. My soundbar has 4K passthrough, but it is limited to 4K@30Hz.

I tried a similar thing with an old Monoprice HDMI switch that I purchased a few years back (definitely limited to 1080p). However, this only resulted in no display at all (I checked with a 1080p monitor and I saw the display from the Shield to ensure that the last mode was 1080p before trying the switch - I actually expected this to work) If anyone has a cheap HDMI switch recommendation, that is confirmed to work, or some other device that would limit the HDMI to 1080p then this would be workable.......... Crazy that one has to explore these alternatives since neither Nvidia nor Samsung has any control offered on their HDMI ports.

I do have a Monoprice HDX-401 HDMI switch and and a cheap 1x2 HDMI splitter (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003UYOEMI) Tonight, I will test with those and report.

Very much appreciated - look forward to the results......

Yes, but do you have adjust display frame rate turned on in Kodi, that should switch it to 1080/24Hz if you're playing 23.976 content.

Huh?

Huh?

Kodi doesn't switch refresh rates when SATV output is 2160p.

Right, for got about that. TVHZ then and manually switch to 24Hz. ??

It may be wrong......just trying to think of something to help.

Oddly, TVHZ only shows 30 and 60Hz for 2160p. I have had the TV for only about a month now. Haven't had much time to look into all this in detail.

RE: NVIDIA Shield (Android TV set-top box) - Nekromantik - 2015-08-10

That is something I hope Nvidia fix in the firmware.
Kodi should not care what resolution it is, as long as tv supports 24hz it should switch but its down to firmware on the box.

RE: NVIDIA Shield (Android TV set-top box) - samboy - 2015-08-11

Thanks for the tip on TVHZ

Looked promising but only offered 30HZ and 60HZ and unfortunately Samsung TV stayed in 2160p mode for both.
I've posted to an Nvidia request thread and hopefully NVidia considers adding HDMI control to their Shield Android TV.
I expect others will be in the same position down the road with some UHD Bluray players not having the best scalers for regular 1080p Bluray.

b.t.w.. I'm mainly playing back 1080i/720p material that I've recorded from an antenna.

Thanks for everyone's help so far........

So, I checked the Monoprice HDMI switch and the HDMI splitter I have linked in my earlier post. With the Monoprice switch I got a blank display after the initial nVIDIA boot logo. The switch is only HDMI 1.3, and I am not sure of the HDCP version. With the splitter, I got 1080p and Kodi refresh rate switching worked correctly for all refresh rates (24/50//60).
