With each movie at a certain point.. (Never in the beginning)

That is odd. Okay, I'll watch a 3D ISO ('Big Hero 6' 3D HK import) in 2D all the way this weekend.

so what is it about the pi that lets it play 3d mvc mkv's ?
will we be able to use that function on other platforms ?

A firmware that enables the hardware's built in mvc decoder.

Theres nothing wrong with the iso as i said. It plays completely fine with other programs.
Maybe it says that cause its mvc?
It shouldnt abort cause it plays fine in 2d

Do you get the same read errors in Kodi when playing the ISO locally (not over smb://)? Or try it over nfs://, same problem or not?

Yes same problem.
I hope devs can look into it, but ill think they say ffmpeg doesnt support mvc, so case closed.
However it plays fine, it shouldnt abort in 2d

AFAIK mvc is irrelevant to this. If you are playing in 2D it looks just like a regular AVC bluray.

Whats wrong then? Its not irrelevant since normal 2d iso play normal as well.
Its 3d iso played as 2d that stops without reason and without error warning.

It might be a useful test, avc mkv vs. mvc mkv. See if either stops playing. However the error identified earlier looks likely culprit.
