So far the only player than can do MPEG-2 4:2:2 is the WDTV Live player (years old!). I haven't tested if the WDTV can bitstream DTS-HD MA tho.
Have a sample I can test with? MediaInfo doesn't indicate profile it seems (like 4:2:2). Just tried on a OTA capture of Monday's Grammys, which is 1080i mpeg2. Profile just shows "Main@High".

RE: Kodi Media Player Options with Full 3D & HD Audio - noggin - 2016-02-17

OTA broadcast for regular viewers will be 4:2:0 - that's what ATSC and consumer DVB both use.

Broadcast uplinks (and some - ahem - online versions...) are often 4:2:2 - though increasingly MPEG2 is being replaced by H264.

4:2:2 in either flavour is usually CPU decode only, with no VAAPI support. My i5-4250u NUC can do 38Mbs MPEG2 and H264 1080/50i with a YADIF 2x de-interlace but only since decode became multithreaded.

The WDTVLive is really unusual in supporting hardware MPEG2 4:2:2 decode.

Hdmkv, u got the new himedia already?

RE: Kodi Media Player Options with Full 3D & HD Audio - hdmkv - 2016-02-18

Yep, have had it for about 2 weeks. Under NDA, so can't comment w/details... all I can say is based on my tests so far, it's excellent! 3D ISO, HD audio, 24p & 4K fans are in for a treat! Basically, everything the current-gen Q5/Q10 do well, but faster, better. There are a few bugs (nothing unfixable, at least I'm speculating not), so a small group of us are providing feedback to HiMedia. Their engineers have been very receptive, responsive. We're expecting to go through a number of firmware updates (from present v1.0), as their engineers have already alerted us, until release to public.

Cool.
When do you get a green light to talk about it

RE: Kodi Media Player Options with Full 3D & HD Audio - hdmkv - 2016-02-18

It's slated for release March 31 (or early April possibly) I think, so hopefully they okay me posting a review within 3 weeks from now.

Will upload you a sample. The backhaul feed of the Grammy's via KU Satellite was 4:2:2 as is all the CBS backhauls. There are many other backhauls that are 4:2:2

RE: Kodi Media Player Options with Full 3D & HD Audio - alanisrox69 - 2016-02-19

Here's a sample of Mpeg-2 4:2:2. It has DTS-HD MA 5.1 as the main audio track (converted from Dolby-E PCM as there are no known plugins to decode Dolby-E on the fly, so converting to DTS-HD MA is the best choice to keep it lossless), and also Mpeg Audio 2.0 @ 384kbps as secondary audio. This was from the Grammy's backhaul feed on Monday via Free-to-Air satellite...so it should be fine to post online Wink

It's hard to get a player that decodes 4:2:2, but like I said, the WDTV Live decodes it like a champ.

As you'll see in the MediaInfo it does show it as 4:2:2@high Wink

RE: Kodi Media Player Options with Full 3D & HD Audio - hdmkv - 2016-02-19

Thanks, I'll try it... you had to do Bieber, and not Alabama Shakes, The Weeknd, or something cool?! Wink Just kidding; Bieber these days ain't half bad Smile.

Update: Just tested it, and you're right, current-gen Q5 won't play it (blank screen) & also next-gen Q10 Pro won't play it (same issue). Can you please leave that sample on mega.nz; I'm passing it to HiMedia engineers. Thanks!

RE: Kodi Media Player Options with Full 3D & HD Audio - alanisrox69 - 2016-02-19
