"Ignore" Feature for Directories or Specific Files - alexhaydock - 2015-03-26

Hopefully this hasn't already been suggested or isn't already a feature (if it is, I've been unable to find it). Hopefully this would be an easy feature to integrate.

Sometimes when maintaining archives and collections of media, there is media that you would rather Kodi did not attempt to scan and integrate into its database, but should be archived within the main directory trees scanned by Kodi.

Some examples I can think of:
  • Directory containing multiple versions/releases of the same movie
  • Movie/DVD "extras" stored in many individual video files, that Kodi attempts to add as separate movies

Unfortunately, my current way of dealing with this - by necessity - is entirely removing the files in question, and placing them in a non-indexed location, or renaming the files to a .bak extension - which is then ignored by Kodi. Not an ideal setup.

On Android, this is dealt with by creating a blank .nomedia file in a directory. This lets the apps on the Android OS (such as Gallery, Music etc.) know to ignore all media in that directory.

For Kodi, I propose the following:
  • Existence of a file named .ignoredir within a directory will cause Kodi to ignore all media and .nfo files in the directory.
  • Existence of a file named .ignoretree within a directory will cause Kodi to ignore all media and .nfo files in the directory, and any subdirectories.
  • To ignore specific files, but not the complete contents of a directory, an .ignore text file could be created, simply listing files that should be ignored by Kodi.

I think this (or something similar) would be a great feature, as it would enable people to keep archives and collections organised with minimal intervention required or impact caused. Users who did not wish to use the feature would be unaffected and could safely ignore it.

Thanks to anyone that considers or implements this suggestion. I am a big fan of all the hard work put into Kodi by everyone involved! Smile
