read it might be better. with xysubfilter the subtitle sizes appear bigger on the same size setting when the video has no black bars. Anyone know why that is the case?

Yes. Because the subtitles size is proportional to the video window's size.
I solved this with a set of rules, while alternating between vsFilter and Xysubfilter. But that works for me because I tend to watch movies only in hi-res (and movies are the ones with black bars). So vsFilter (which does not have the problem) is used when black bars are present, while xySubfilter is used when there are no black bars.
Unfortunately it's a sorry state of things of which I'm sadly aware.

The idea is to use xysubsfilter (that renders at high resolution independently from video resolution) for videos that fill the top and bottom portion of the screen. Tipically 1.33 (4:3) content is low resolution, but subs are rendered in high res, thanks to xysubsfilter.

Directvobsub_(auto-loading_version) is used for content that does not fill the bottom portion of the screen. For me that is typically hi-res content, so subs are rendered in hi-res anyway. Your mileage might vary in this regard.

This is encouraging! This subtitle oddity is the one thing that's been keeping me from using DSPlayer exclusively. Curious about one thing... is there a reason not to use directvobsub for everything? I've used it with ZoomPlayer for years. And if not, how would I set that up in DSPlayer?

That's quite clever! I thought about doing it, back then, decided against it because I feared the extra computational aspect of that and the potential to throw a "wrench" in a well oiled mechanism. But my fears are probably unfounded and this looks definitely as a working solution (with the added advantage of giving you hi-res subs even for SD 1.78/1.85/2.35:1 material).

1. When I try to play a movie the DSPlayer is switching in to the fullscreen mode, my display is black for 2-3 seconds (this is fine, I can see on my receiver that the display mode is switched) but then the DS player is showing up like this:

As you can see on my screenshot the player is not switching correclty into the fullscreen mode and the windows taskbar is always visisble. If I hit "alt + enter" then the player is switching into the correct fullscreen mode without showing the windows taskbar anymore. Did I do something wrong configuration wise or what do I need to do in order to fix this problem?

2. My second problem is related to viewing 3D movies. I have a Samsung TV with active 3D (plus shutter 3D glases), and everytime I try to watch a movie in 3D the DS player is not switching into the correct mode as well. This happens even when I force the TV with my remote into the 3D mode via 3D button. What do I need to setup here to get it work.?
