RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Warner306 - 2019-11-20 (2019-11-20, 14:56)fandangos Wrote: Just an update, I'm halting the DSPlayer project for now for a few reasons:I appreciate the effort. I think DSPlayer has functioned successfully for many years without Blu-ray menu support. And I can tell you from experience that the vast majority of users of Nvidia Shields, other streaming boxes and HTPCs are using mkvs and not BDMV folders or ISOs. The file sizes are much smaller to reduce storage needs, there is greater support among available players and these files are more reliable to use. So libbluray support isn't likely a huge concern to most core DSPlayer users. If you want to continue trying to update DSPlayer to v19, by all means go ahead. I would be first in line to test and spread the word to the other forms that I frequent. However, we all know DSPlayer, like everything else in life, will eventually end and I don't think many will complain too much that they have to use something else. We can all adapt to change. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - fandangos - 2019-11-20 Yes, I'm totally aware of that but I have a few reasons to prefer disc formats like extra features, if you don't access to the full disk or a copy of it, you can't get those, your best alternative is a remux that keeps a 1:1 copy. Another reason is that remuxing extra contents from ISOs or BDMV is a boring process, so having the disc and access to it is much faster. You have to go into some site like DVD Beaver or something and check the tittle time and compare, it's a pain. And finally, menus are really cool and nostalgic Having a easy to use and easy of access player like Kodi supporting it would, maybe, increase the amount of users that prefer this format. And, I'm going to get stoned for this but at 2.5 meters away from my 65 inches 4K TV I can barely if at all see any difference from regular Kodi compared to DSplayer. The only reason it would make actually sense is because of it's amazing Tone mapping capabilities (specially for projectors). I honestly don't see NGU as a night and day difference for regular TVs. That's just my opinion and I sure do understand everybody else choosing MKV files. I'm actually struggling to give access to my brother over internet to my files so he can use Kodi to play those ISOs and BDMVs. If there were only mkv remuxes just Plex or Emby would solve it. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - IT007 - 2019-11-20 Thanks for the effort, if it was simple it would have probably been ported by now. I think the main point of Dsplayer, at least for me, is customization, setting up everything just the way you want it. I do it with hardware and like to do it with software too. Stock Kodi is way too limited for me in this sense. Personally I can see clear advantage to image quality with Madvr upscaling too but that's just a bonus. (projector setup). Since setting up Dsplayer I really started to like the advantages that Kodi with internal player can offer, resume points shared between clients, subtitle search and adjustment etc. At this point going back to external player would be a pretty significant downgrade to the experience. For me staying with Kodi 17.6 is not a problem, at least until the add-ons stop working. It's a real shame that no alternative seems to come close to same usability. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - Warner306 - 2019-11-20 (2019-11-20, 17:34)fandangos Wrote: Yes, I'm totally aware of that but I have a few reasons to prefer disc formats like extra features, if you don't access to the full disk or a copy of it, you can't get those, your best alternative is a remux that keeps a 1:1 copy. Yes, for native 4K UHD content on an UHD TV, there is a minimal difference between madVR and other players when it comes to 4K UHD passthrough. Chroma upscaling on displays that most often use a native 4:2:2 chroma resolution is negligible at best. I bet I could still notice a difference in sharpness, but I am not the average user. DSPlayer has considerable value for those with projectors, anyone who wants to upscale sub 4K UHD resolutions and post-process video content and perhaps those with true HDR display owners that will take advantage of HDR tone mapping for bright specular highlights that is being improved at AVS Forums at the moment. And don't discredit critical features for hardcore users such as superior 3D LUT support that can have an image-altering impact on the resulting displayed image or projector zoom/anamorphic scaling for scope projector screens. The ability to use 8-bit RGB output with 10-bit content with invisible dithering is also important to many users. There is more there than just HDR passthrough that is valued by most DSPlayer users. These are not the typical plug-and-play users who value simplicity. They want deep customization, flexibility and care about high-end video processing. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - oldpainless - 2019-11-20 "They want deep customization, flexibility and care about high-end video processing" Amen. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - fandangos - 2019-11-20 (2019-11-20, 18:08)IT007 Wrote: Since setting up Dsplayer I really started to like the advantages that Kodi with internal player can offer, resume points shared between clients, subtitle search and adjustment etc. At this point going back to external player would be a pretty significant downgrade to the experience. That we have to agree Kodi has the best user interface that I can think of. JRiver has Madvr support with libbluray 1.1.2 and flawless playback and it's the one that comes closer to be the best but the user interface 1996 iTunes like.. the theater mode that is terrible, the lack of downloading subtitles while movie is playing, if you want a menu that you can use your keyboard it will be very limited or your can right click the screen to show of a drop down menu like Windows Explorer.. The reason I want to fix the chapter bug within Kodi it's because it's amazing when it works, you can see all chapters in the timeline, you can skip using a mouse if you want, or pressing the arrow keys or pressing the OSD menu buttons. It's so many easy options that are far better than using the chapter menu in the bluray, you can have the best of both worlds if that would work. I have the OPPO 203 here that is considered one of the best players in the world but again I keep turning back to Kodi. The text interface, the lack of subtitle download.. makes it very dull. Hopefully we can have it all and I'm sure going to do my best for it, so we can have MadVR, paired with Kodi GUI and libbluray. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - IT007 - 2019-11-20 Yeah, before Dsplayer I too tried pretty much every feasible alternative and came to the same conclusion, Kodi with it's add-ons and skins is simply the best from user experience standpoint, and nothing really seems to have changed in the last few years. With Dsplayer it really is the closest at "best of both worlds" (Customization & user experience) HTPC users can hope to get. I think it's a pretty small group that care so much about this stuff, but it's all the more passionate. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - ashlar - 2019-11-20 @fandangos first of all best wishes for your graduation process. As far as libbluray is concerned, I understand the attraction, although I'm the category that would love you dearly for a Kodi DSPlayer 19.0 without libbluray. Warner306 has explained clearly all the benefits that madVR brings to the table. For me the best is currently the quality achievable with sub-HD resolutions material. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - oldpainless - 2019-11-20 @fandangos I'm not sure it it makes it easier, or more complicated, but I'd be over the moon with the latest Kodi updated to include Madvr, minus Lav (no offence Nev), as base Kodi has superior audio up scaling abilities (no surprises there, given its background). K RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - oldpainless - 2019-11-20 Tried to edit my post, but as usual with these Boards,I did not want my post misunderstood - I would prefer Lav audio added, with the ability to upscale/resample audio, but that is down to Nev, but as a purist, I doubt he would consider adding, and I respect that. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - ashlar - 2019-11-20 (2019-11-20, 20:52)oldpainless Wrote: Tried to edit my post, but as usual with these Boards,I did not want my post misunderstood - I would prefer Lav audio added, with the ability to upscale/resample audio, but that is down to Nev, but as a purist, I doubt he would consider adding, and I respect that.Well, with DSPlayer you can resample audio by adding ffdshow audio as a sound processor, problem solved. Unless you mean something different. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - oldpainless - 2019-11-21 I know, but it's very limited. RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - ashlar - 2019-11-21 (2019-11-21, 08:56)oldpainless Wrote: I know, but it's very limited. Not knowing your specific needs it's impossible to propose solutions. If you want to go into details, now you've piqued my curiosity. I suppose we're talking music listening here. Or are you so keen on upsampling for movies/TV watching? RE: Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows - oldpainless - 2019-11-21 Hi. Not music, as that is taken care of by the main Kodi audio player. My interest is in upsampling Movies and TV to 192khz, in a similar way the Kodi audio player can upscale to high quality 7.1 192khz, if that makes sense. I honestly don't see the point, but that's your choice. As far as I'm aware, I'm afraid there's only ffdshow that gives you the opportunity to upsample. But if you consider that low quality (there's several options in there), I'm out of suggestions. |
