MythTV: 'Buffering' Video Lag - timo1023 - 2008-04-20

I just updated to the latest T3CH build, and tried out the new MythTV front-end client. I can see my recorded shows and their thumbnails; however, when I play a video I get about 3 seconds of decent playback and about 10 seconds of "buffering" (with 'buffering' displaying on the bottom of my screen). Could I fix this by changing cache settings or is this a non-XBMC issue?

Thanks.

In the neverending thread on this topic, one fellow mentioned that he upgraded his backend from ubuntu gutsy to ubuntu hardy and an alsa upgrade that was included took care of the stuttering. I don't want to upgrade my backend at least until the official release as every time I upgrade my family is without TV for a week while I figure out the new 'features'. I am hoping that a new version sorts it out. I expect that T3CH will put one out any day now.

- elupus - 2008-04-20

are you on wlan?

- timo1023 - 2008-04-20

No, I'm not using wlan. The backend is an old MythDora Dist. that my Dad setup (not the best, but gotta give him credit for doing it himself). I plan on reformatting it to Ubuntu soon, so maybe that will fix the problem.

Just for the sake of clarity uprading from gutsy to hardy is a fix for the stuttering on the linux XBMC front end and as far as I can see is not related to the backend i.e a remote gutsy backend works fine. I have a gutsy backend, seperate hardy frontend and xbox frontend and both frontends work fine without stuttering so I would be supprised if a gutsy to hardy backend upgrade corrected the stuttering.

- elupus - 2008-04-21

it could, if there is something that spikes cpu usage while backend is active. then xbmc would stutter due to that. thus it would only happen if they are both on same computer.

I get the same buffering to varying degrees on the five machines I have scattered throughout the house, some wired, some wireless. All machines are xboxes, running the latest T3CH SVN. My backend is MythTV 0.21 running on Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10.

I have done some playing and can offer the following observations:

1. DVDPlayer is definitely worse than MPlayer, although with MPlayer, I seem to be able to play longer chunks of video before it has to rebuffer.

2. Here is an interesting one... If I share the mythtv recordings directory as a samba share and create a video source in xbmc that points to it, I can play a mythtv recordings beautifully in xbmc with no buffering/stuttering issues at all! This works fine for both wired and wireless xboxes!

Looking forward to this one getting resolved.

CCMythFile::Seek - rtelford - 2008-04-22

Hello All,

I have a weird one that I have not seen anyone else talk about.

My setup is Myth .21 on Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy)
Latest SVN from t3ch (build date 20th April)

I have two type of tuners in the myth, while watching recording from one type I can see around the file skipping forward and back at will, everything is fine.
However, seeking in a recording from the other tuner types will completely lock up the xbox. I have turned on full debug and have retrieved the log file after the lockup, it seems that XFILE::CCMythFile::Seek is being called endlessly. You can also see from the log there is a 1 second or so pause before the system detects a still frame. This does not happen on the working recordings.

I suspect there must me something subtly different in the mpeg stream, that is upsetting mplayer.

a full debug log would tell me ALOT more. but, there is a bug in quite a few of ffmpeg's demuxers which cause them to end up in a almost nonending loop if the input stream fails to seek or return timestamps properly.

Just updated xbox to the latest T3CH rev 12746 and now when I select a channel from the livetv page the xbox freezes. Log here http://www.pastebin.ca/994637 ( Other linux frontend with latest build still runs fine. Thanks.

Morning!

I just want to mention this, but im sorry right now i dont have my log file with me. I was watching a recording and all of a sudden my backend segfaulted and XBMC locked up tight. I was looking at the log on the backend b4 it crashed, and it looks like Myth was getting ready to record a show, and for some reason it sent a popup to ask if it can start recording the show in 30 sec. Now i dont know why it asked, because i was watchin a recording, and it doesnt do that on a reg mythtv frontend. It only asks when your watching live tv and it wants to switch to it. Regardless, it tried to ask XBMC if it could record, and well crashed the backend and XBMC. If you want logs, ill try to see if i can get some tonight. Just thought i should inform you guys!

Cheers!

Just for reference the guide works fine

Full Log here:

it contains 1 file that will play ok
myth://mythtv:********@192.168.1.1/recordings/4007_20080422143000.mpg

and one that crashes.
myth://mythtv:********@192.168.1.1/recordings/1022_20080422183500.mpg

I mounted my recordings directory via smb and have been able to play everything fine. Seems the problem is when the file is being streamed via myth protocols.

R.

Problems getting the guide working - bejam - 2008-05-03

Hi, have managed to get live tv working and the channels come up fine under "Live Channels" but when clicking on Guide nothing happens. The log has an error:
ERROR: GetGuide - unable to get list of channels with url myth://mythtv:mythtv@localhost/guide

Am in the UK and the guide is based on EIT from DVB-T (works fine in myth frontend).

Am running xbmc on Ubuntu 8.04 with myth 0.21-fixes and compiled xbmc from latest svn this morning. Mythbackend running on same box.

What am I doing wrong??

Thanks
