It is possible to map a remote button to a script (or even make it an add-on) to stop the current video and play something random. Even make it so that it jumps to a random point within the video, so it looks like he's been watching that the whole time.

In Kodi do the following:- System / System / Video Output / Display Mode / Change display mode to Windowed.
Top right you should have the minimize button available.
