I'm using a fire stick. I've got RetroArch installed and the IARL. I can play ROMs directly from RetroArch that I copy over myself. When I try to launch them from IARL, RetroArch opens at the menu instead of launching the game. I have set the Update Download Path to Default, Update Launcher is set to External, and Update Ext Launcher Command is set to RetroArch Nestopia (NES), which is the one I downloaded and use in RetroArch. I've tried downloading then launching. It always takes me to the RetroArch menu.
What am I doing wrong??
Thanks!
Have you tried opening the context menu on each game list in IARL and clicking 'Updating Ext Launcher Command' and setting the correct Retroarch core? This will tell Retroarch what emulator to use in order to launch the game.

Yes. I've updated all 4 cores for NES that I could find (Emux, FCEUmm, Nestopia, QuickNES). I load a core, then load ROM with no issues in RetroArch.
In IARL, I've tried setting the launch command for Internet Archive Best Of - NES to RetroArch Nestopia (NES), RetroArch QuickNES (NES), and RetroArch EMUX NES (NES). Try to launch one of the ROMs in that archive and it open RetroArch at the same spot I left it.
Update ... so, apparently I have to close RetroArch every time I play. This correct? I'll keep testing.

You probably need to set the retroarch config file setting in IARL. Android command line requires that to launch correctly.

Any help on doing this? I can't find any config file to point to. I've searched all over the internet and looked through the Fire TV Stick. Never found anything that actually told me where this file is.

See the wiki here. The addon has to point to the same config file that Retroarch does, which can be different depending on your android box. If the retroarch config is saved in some location that Kodi can't view / access, you can change the location for the config file in retroarch settings to point somewhere Kodi can access.
Download to network share on android? - nukeman - 2016-12-01
Love IARL! I've been using it for a while on a Windows installation, now I'm trying to move everything over to my nvidia shield. I've almost got everything configured to my liking but I'm having trouble with downloading roms to a network share rather than the default location. I'd like to do this so I can have one copy of the rom and access it from several different systems.
I created a file source via the kodi gui and pointed it to a (SMB) share on my network. I then browsed to that share via the IARL "Update Download Path" option for Internet Archive Best Of - NES. The relevant option in the dat xml file looks like this:
Code: <emu_downloadpath>smb://NAS/emulation/roms/nes/</emu_downloadpath>
This all seems reasonable but when I try to launch a game, IARL says "Downloading..." for a second, then nothing happens. The relevant (I think) parts of the kodi debug log look this:
Code: 21:50:48 T:1449691440 NOTICE: IARL: Download and Launch started for 10. Super Mario Bros.

21:50:49 T:1449691440 ERROR: IARL: There was an error downloading the requested files, so the game will not be launched.
I've tried to download the file manually and it works. The only thing I can think of is android has trouble with the "smb://" convention in the path or maybe it doesn't like the spaces in the file name. FWIW, this used to work on my windows installation. In fact I was even using UNC paths in the dat file. That configuration looked like this:
Code: <emu_downloadpath>\\nas\emulation\roms\nes</emu_downloadpath>
I suppose I got by with this because windows could handle the UNC at the OS level, maybe android can't?
If I leave the download path setting as default, the rom downloads fine to the the plugin.program.iarl/temp_iarl directory and the game launches as expected. Any ideas what I might be missing?
Thanks!
RE: Internet Archive ROM Launcher - JLCollins005 - 2016-12-01
Forgive me if I missed this somewhere but I'm hoping for some help.
I am struggling with this, I have both retro and iarl installed with cores downloaded, I have went through the wizard but every time I click launch it shows working which looks like it is about to and then it just doesn't do anything working message goes away and I am right back at the rom I clicked on. I have tried this with a couple different ones but have had 0 luck, if someone could help nudge me in the right direction that would be awesome.
Thanks

Thanks for this report. I've honestly not tried that. Apparently thats not possible. However, I could probably make a post download command to copy the file to a different location. I'll look into it.

Try the steps 1-3 in the wiki. Then, go to step 5. "Configure individual IARL archives" and see if you can set up an archive manually to launch.

Hey Zach! I want to say thank you so much for this add on. It is incredible for my Amazon Firestick because you cannot store much on it.
I did want to mention on my Firestick the search function does not work. This is something I have seen posted earlier in the thread, but you request a debug report and it was never provided. I would t know how to do that, but I can describe the issue:
When you search it will say compling results and you can see the results but the pop up says 95% and never finishes loading. You have to close the Kodi app because it freezes up. I haven't had it work yet, I thought it was because it took awhile to search through, but I checked with systems that have a short list of games and still no luck.
Again thank you so much for this add on. If there is any more info I can provide about the issue, please let me know and I will do my best to get it to you!

I actually just got a firestick so I can test and fix issues with android. I'll look into this.

Hi Zach,
Appreciate the help, I had gone through it once but must have missed something doing it again and I was able to get roms to load for most systems other than playstation it will show converting 7z and then say fail any tips? Also xbox controller support can you point in the direction to get that configured and working with this.
Great addon so far.
Thanks,

7zip for android currently doesn't work. I think I may have found a solution. Hopefully it'll be working in the next update.

Does anyone know how to manually enter a command line for a retroarch core not listed in the launch commands, I'm using a Firestick which is Android if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance!
