Old ATV1 Update - g4m8l3r - 2015-07-11

Hi guys n gals, newbie here.......

Iv recently inherited an old ATV1 thats running XBMC Eden. I am currently using the new version of Kodi on my usual HTPC so I am familiar with the environment.

I am wanting to upgrade the ATV to helix stable. It is currently running Crystalbuntu.

I have gone through many forums on here but cant find one set to exactly what I want, could someone please help me get this updated some way shape or form please? I am a Windows user but do have PuTTy downloaded, I can remove the HDD if needed from the ATV.........

Thanks in advance

RE: Old ATV1 Update - wrxtasy - 2015-07-11

I've already compiled Kodi Helix 14.2 with CHD Hardware acceleration put back into Kodi.

Simple Kodi Helix update instructions are here:
http://forum.osmc.tv/showthread.php?tid=17422

If this is unsuccessful it will be due to the underlying Crystalbuntu OS being too old.
If that is the case then you will have to follow the instructions in this thread to upgrade to Crystalbuntu2 first:
https://discourse.osmc.tv/t/install-crystalbuntu2-kodi-instructions-for-osx-or-windows-users/5169/15

Sam Nazarko who originally released Crystalbuntu on the ATV1 will release OSMC as an upgrade OS for the ATV1 maybe this year and that will be continued into the future.

Great, I will try the simple update to helix now.

I have lost count of how many people have mentioned Sam releasing the OSMC OS for the ATV1 haha I cant wait for the release my self.

RE: Old ATV1 Update - g4m8l3r - 2015-07-11

First thing I have noticed......

Next > Gotham > Programs > Crystalbuntu Settings > System Configuration > SSH Server > Enable > OK (bottom left)

There is no such item in the programs list, I have checked if its in the disabled addons but cannot find it....

However I have opened putty and connected to the ATV and logged in successfully...

When I enter the following command "sudo wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/27641650/Crystalbuntu%20ATV1/Kodi14.2.Install.sh" I get an error message saying it cannot establish a secure ssl connection, I can use the --no-check-certificate to go unsecured...?

When I do add the extra no check certificate on the end I get these results:

atv@Crystalbuntu:~$ sudo wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/27641650/Crystalbuntu%20ATV1/Kodi14.2.Install.shsudo wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/27641650/Crystalbuntu%20ATV1/Kodi14.2.Install.sh --no-check-certificate

RE: Old ATV1 Update - wrxtasy - 2015-07-11

You will have to upgrade to Crystalbuntu2 then....

the command doesnt seem to do anything?

RE: Old ATV1 Update - wrxtasy - 2015-07-12

Yes it does patience Grasshopper. Wink

I suggest you you put your feet up for a couple of hours and leave it to re-image the ATV Hard Drive.
The command prompt will reappear.

RE: Old ATV1 Update - wrxtasy - 2015-07-12

Pull the power cord and remove the USB....

Then just follow the instructions as per the Link I gave you, the hard bit is over Wink

RE: Old ATV1 Update - g4m8l3r - 2015-07-12

Well iv updated successfully to Helix now thank you very much for the help to achieve it. Smile

Since you managed to sort me out with the previous I was hoping I could pick your brain a bit more........
As the ATV runs quite hot (already cleaned it out....) how would I go about running it directly from a USB stick rather than the old IDE HDD?
Iv backed up Kodi on my laptop (windows based) using the xmbc backup addon and the usb sd card wizard and attempted to restore on the ATV using both programs but none of them seem to restore everything.....wallpaper...skin settings....addon settings..... all missing for some reason, any idea why or how to proceed? since Kodi on my laptop is exactly how I want it on ATV I would just like to copy everything over and have it identical on the ATV.

Thanks again much appreciated.

RE: Old ATV1 Update - wrxtasy - 2015-07-13

Nice work Smile

- The ATV1 case is designed to be warm to touch as it acts as a heat sink. Its part of the design, I would not worry about it.

- There is currently no usb stick image floating around, besides Kodi runs a lot better from the HDD.

- If you want to copy your Kodi settings (entire Userdata folder) from your windows Laptop, use Cyberduck to connect to Crystalbuntu on the ATV1
Username is: atv
Password is: atv

You Userdata folder location for Kodi on Windows is found here:
http://kodi.wiki/view/userdata

Drag it to here on the ATV1:

/home/atv/.kodi/

RE: Old ATV1 Update - illiac4 - 2015-07-14

As far as i remember i have to have somewhere an image of usb stick that i have made for one friend. Will take a look into, if i still have it and upload it on my server.

Found it. I am uploading it right now it is around 2,5 gb compressed and fits on 8gb usb stick. Just use win32img to write it. If someone want you can update it to helix release and upload it with newest cb2 things for other appletv users that have stayed empty handed sice cb2 servers are down.
Maybe wrxtasy can tweak it to the latest version.
