Otherwise the box just outputs to TV whatever is the resolution in the mi box android settings e.g 720p60 or whatnot when the actual video is 1080p24 ---> stuttering cos of the 3:2 pulldown. After restart I get "normal" 2160p24.
I remember that there was talk about that mi box will force upscale stuff to 4K, which is kinda a shame...

Refresh rate works. Resolution doesn't work, like you said it always outputs 4k. I just leave it on 1080/24p and with the rare 60p movie I got, I manually switch it to 1080/60p.

Hi,
I wanted to do the same thing (my TV upscale should be better) but there's a problem : when doing that, your movie will be played at 24fps (not 23.976fps) ==> I saw it by pressing CTRL + MAJ + O during the movie.
When the "Autorefresh" option is activated, CTRL + MAJ + O shows 23.976fps.
Maybe it's not a big deal but I wanted to share it with you.
Have a nice day!

RE: Xiaomi 4K HDR 'Mi Box' (Android TV set-top box) - buyman - 2020-03-29

Would you still recommend the Mi Box over the Mi Box S? I currently use a RPi3 for Kodi, but need a device for Netflix, Prime and Disney+. As the RPi3 is also limited in terms of h265 I'd like to find a one fits all device. My AV-receiver is capable decoding the lossless audio formats (currently running a 1080p TV and 5.2 audio setup), so I guess I definitely want to keep the audio passthrough option and go for the non-S version (if I can manage to buy it somewhere). Or some higher class box like the Nvidia Shield TV or an Apple TV?

"For those of you who are interested, here’s a tip on the command line to manage the passthrough on the Mi Box S:

Enable developer options

adb connect <IP Mi box>: 5555
adb shell settings put global digital_sound 1
adb shell settings put global encoded_surround_output 2

encoded_surround_output 0 = auto (random behavior)
encoded_surround_output 1 = pcm
encoded_surround_output 2 = always

I recommend option 2 (always)"

Has someone tried that? Did it work?

Registered just to say this helps!

I had a MiBox that I'd factory reset on 2573. As a result it had lost the 'Always' setting, just had 'Auto'. It could do DD 5.1 in Kodi, but no DD+. Netflix would not do DD+ either.

I soldered up a Male-Male cable, fired up adb, ran the commands, did a reboot and boom. DD+ working in Netflix. Thanks a heap!

Unfortunately, Kodi still does not do DD+ passthru, only DD 5.1. I have a Vodafone TV as well, and DD+ does not work in Kodi on that either.

Any tips?

@galapogos01 you could get in to the latest beta build(s), updates are coming quite frequently these days;

https://www.androidsage.com/2020/04/11/xiaomi-mi-box-s-android-9-pie-ota2-beta-3-hotfix-update-with-build-r2603/

With the first beta of this new build I have DD+ everywhere available (Kodi, Netflix, Prime Video, etc.).

Did they broke it again after beta 1? With the OTA update i only can passthrough at Netlix and not with KODI. Also which kodi version are you running?
Thanks

They flushed us with beta's the last two weeks and this week with a Final version. I still get DD(+) and DTS. Kodi version is Final 18.6.

okay that is strange. For me the final version with KODI 18.6 is only working with transcoding everything to AC3, while netflix works with DD+. Just wanted to know if it would be worth to downgrade to beta 1.

I started from scratch with the beta1, did a clean install with that. Skipped beta 2 & 3 and went directly to the Final build 2604 when the OTA update came available. I've tested quite some media after that update and the codecs that are supported are working. Maybe it's a Android audio system setting that isn't OK on your side?

sound output: always
and then i ticked all codecs which are compatible with my receiver.

Also tried auto but this is worse for me. Which settings do you use?

Under Android settings;
- Audio = Auto
- DTS = 0

Under Kodi: pass through = active, and then all is ticked what is available to tick Wink

I again just tested the video/audio samples I have for audio. Every audio HD stream is played as;

DTS (+ New) < receiver info (source is DTS-HD, Atmos, and other DTS formats)
DD and DD+ (source = DD or DD+)

That is way less then when I use a Intel Based HTPC (signature), but it plays what is says it could play, so...

Connection = HDMI

Hi everyone.

Are you guys noticing (like me) that MiBox 3 struggles a bit with huge files (4k HDR Bluray Remux, ~80000 kbps) with Kodi ?

I'm starting to consider to replace it with another box...

Thanks for your help.

My MiBox S came with Android 8.1. Should I update it to 9.0?

Do you think you have a reason for the upgrade? Missing something with 8.1 that you will get with ATV9?

Not really because it's my first time using ATV in general. But maybe the update made some speed improvements or something like that. Guess I would stick with what it works then. Ty
