It is optical, and you do need a mini-toslink connector for it.

Been playing around with the Mi Box for a few days now using both Kodi Jarvis and SPMC from the Play Store. While everything works well, I notice that there is frame skipping every 10 seconds or so on all my video files. I'm sensitive enough that it ruins the viewing experience. Anyone else seeing this? I had the same problem with Ouya when it was first released, but was able to get my video acceleration settings where they needed to be to eliminate the skipping.

Not a big fan of the remote's lack of proper media player buttons (long pressing the big button serves as a play/pause button). When I get a chance I'll see if my Flirc works with Mi Box.

For $69, it's an outstanding value, but I think Kodi on Android is still not up to snuff.

I'm seeing the exact same issue. Also, under the Display settings, the "auto resolution detect" option defaults to 720p/60 on my TV. I have a 1080p TV and updated the resolution settings manually to 1080p/60. I also have the HDMI self-adaption setting turned on, but I'm not sure if its doing anything. I see the frame skipping on all the video sources I've tried including Netflix, YouTube, DisneyMoviesAnywhere and KODI. Hopefully a software update will fix this soon.

That's because the Mi Box doesn't have refresh rate switching, so whatever your UI is set to (or defaults to), it renders all videos (23.976, 24, 25, 29.970, etc.) at that resolution. Hence, dropped frames.

Yeah, I figured. I don't recall Ouya have refresh rate switching either, but it handled video a lot better than Mi Box does at the moment.

Also just wanted to report that Flirc works with Mi Box. The limitations of the stock remote can be overcome, albeit with the loss of voice input. Also, it appears I have two user accounts! Not sure how I managed that one.

Can this be fixed through software?

Needs a Mi Box Android Kernel update so all this dynamic refresh switching can operate at an Android OS system level (All Apps) like it does on WeTek Android Core, Hub and Play2 devices. You then get smooth 24p 1080p Netflix for example. Its all Automatic then on AMLogic Smile

There are a few tricks as well, needed for fractional refresh rates of 23.976 / 29.97 / 59.94fps to work properly on AMLogic S905 devices. I call these mods "the hidden booty" so far as a serious Kodi AML media player is concerned. Seems the Xiaomi Kernel developers don't know the AML modified Kernel well enough yet or simple don't care when selling a $69 device to the Great Unwashed general U.S. populace.

Setting a Android GUI of 1080p60hz and then playing 23.976fps video will result in 3:2 pulldown judder when playing back video if all motion compensation & smoothing features are deactivated on a TV. This 1080p60hz selection of course is not ideal at all for 25/50fps video.

Disable the launcher customization app to remove Mi Recommends section from home page

I ask because you need to use Kodi Jarvis and amcodec acceleration to utilize AMLogic's hardware deinterlacing properly. Krypton has issues at the moment with deinterlacing on AML platforms.

Good advice

Yes, Kodi 17 beta 3 isn't performing well with Mi Box atm

Something to do with my Flirc #thanks

Yup that will do perfectly. I personally have a 3.5mm to toslink cable but either option aka cable or adapter works fine.
