Is Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD passthrough still exist? I'm beta tester mibox3 too, but haven't updated yet, afraid this feature gone like mibox s

2016 Mi Box3 - PIE.OTA-BETA0:

Installed today...

Positives:
  • I’m impressed we are still getting support ! Smile
  • Android TV Pie is smoother and snappier.
  • Deinterlacing for FTA TV is now Full Motion and much improved with perfect mpeg2.
  • H.264 deinterlacing is perfect too IF I use a Ugreen USB3 > LAN adapter.
  • Netflix / Prime video etc. DD+ > DD audio downmixing should now work. (untested)
  • Kodi & SmartYoutube auto Refresh Rate switching still works.
  • my Ugreen USB3 > GigaE LAN adapter still works
  • Since last used the Mi Box YouTube & Google Play Movies Apps now works with HDR

Negatives:
  • As suspected you lose Kodi HD audio passthrough.
It’s now the same as all other AMLogic chipset - Android TV Pie v9.0 devices only supporting 2.0 PCM, 5.1 DD, DD+ and DTS audio passthrough.
  • Android TV / Kodi GUI at 1080p. --->>> the Mi Box still auto refresh switches to to the highest supported TV resolution for ALL video content when it should - only - do that do that when actually playing back 4K content.

RE: Xiaomi 4K HDR 'Mi Box' (Android TV set-top box) - onoakino - 2020-08-19

I don't want to update to Pie. I've read from somewhere that to prevent the update from installing we should fill up our mibox3 with files such that there would be insufficient space for the update to download itself. Does this trick work? If so, what directory should I place my "filler" videos?

The loss of HD audio passthrough with the update is a real deal breaker. Any idea if that's something that maybe be could be hacked back in by manually tweaking sound device settings via adb?

RE: Xiaomi 4K HDR 'Mi Box' (Android TV set-top box) - wrxtasy - 2020-08-21

Another update dropped again today ...

2016 Mi Box3 - PIE.OTA0-BETA1:

- Fixed Chromecasting issues (tested and confirmed)
- Refresh Switching stability seems better.

Previous BETA0... with updated info...

  • I seen ATMOS popup on my Panny OLED TV when playing 4K HDR Netflix content. (Netflix uses DD+/ATMOS)
  • Netflix / Prime video etc. DD+ > DD audio downmixing should now work. (untested)
  • Kodi & SmartYoutube auto Refresh Rate switching still works.
  • my Ugreen USB3 > GigaE LAN adapter still works
  • Since I last used the Mi Box HDR YouTube works & Google Play Movies now display HDR logos (GPM HDR untested)
  • HDR to SDR seems to work.

Negatives:
  • HDR Amazon Prime video does not work.
  • As suspected you lose Kodi HD audio passthrough.
It’s now the same as all other AMLogic chipset - Android TV Pie v9.0 devices only supporting 2.0 PCM, 5.1 DD, DD+(ATMOS) and DTS audio passthrough.
  • Android TV / Kodi GUI at 1080p. --->>> the Mi Box still auto refresh switches to to the highest supported TV resolution for ALL video content when it should - only - do that do that when actually playing back 4K content.
  • Bluetooth, that is used for remote connectivity is easily susceptible to Radio Freq. interference from other closely placed, nearby, RF unshielded electronic devices - like my ODROID N2.
Powered the ODROID N2 down and no more Mi Box remote issues.
  • Really old and VC-1 Bluray Rips do Not produce smooth video playback. No AMLogic chipset devices running Android support that properly either.

That's the only feature I was really waiting to be fixed on the new Android 9.0 update. The upscale of the device is way worse than my 4K TV and when it playbacks on that resolution I get lots of stuttering, no smoothness at all. Well, I guess I'll have to fill my storage to avoid getting forced update just like they did on Android 8.

I've been long waiting for the auto refresh rate feature, then we got it broken. I had to disable it and went back to setting the frame rate 1080p resolution at 24 hz. Now, lots of fixes but it's still broken. Such a disappointment.

RE: Xiaomi 4K HDR 'Mi Box' (Android TV set-top box) - radekd2 - 2020-09-30

Hi,
Does DTS HD MA and Dolby Digital True HD sound remain after upgrading to Android TV 9.0?
There are contradictory information on the Polish Xiaomi Mi Box 4K forum. Some people stick to photos that he has stayed, and others that he hasn't.
Regards Radek.

You will lose HD passthru audio support if you upgrade Firmware to Android TV v9.0
It’s the same limitation now for all AMLogic chipset devices running Android TV v8.1 or greater.
I expect the exact same limitation applies to the new Google TV dongle as well.
