PlayStation 3 (PS3) XMB (XrossMediaBar) skin replica/clone ("XMBOX") maybe someday... - MacGyver - 2007-08-20

OK, I know blackbolts thr33 was a joke, but are there any real XMB (XrossMediaBar) skins out there?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XrossMediaBar

Failing that search, I thought I'd try to make one, but seeing how I have never owned a PS3, PS2, PS-One, or a XMB Tv, I am probably not the best person for the task, but can someone tell me if what I made is even close.

Like all the other things I start and don't finish, it is only 720p, and needs to be laid over PM3 (the gold standard of skins).
If it's close I might finish it, if not I'll let it go, it's the home, most of settings, the scripts, video, music, photos, programs. It would not be to hard to finish, but I won't even bother if it sucks too much.

XMBox Test

Don't make fun of my "Settings" icon, I lost the real one, and if you want to see what it's like with an animated background, the filename is at the end of the includes.xml, and some animated images are there too, too bad I couldn't find a PS3 smoke one though.

I always forget to look at xbox-scene. I think I've made 1 post there in 4 years.
Did he ever get anywhere with it, his last post was a year ago, was his the only one?
Not really having a system that uses XMB may have jaded me, but it doesn't seem really very powerfull, and it's kind of constraining. Easy to code for views though, there is only one. Smile
I think if he was to go at it now, with the new list controls jmarshall has created, he'd find that it is alot easier now. The test I posted only took about 4 hours to create from PM3, and most of that was the getting the placement of the icons in each of the modes correct when you switched from one to the other.

I forgot to add, I don't own a PSP either, so I don't know how true to the gui it is.

the problem i ran into with my psp skin was to get the menu working correctly.
i had to use buttonscrollers back then, and eventhough it wasnt perfect, i got pretty close to the PSP interface with the horizontal menu.

the big problem was that when you select.. lets say "settings" the vertical menu would appear.
scrolling though the vertical menu would mean that menu would overlap the horizontal one.
kinda hard to explain without seeing it, but most of the problems were due to crappy button scrollers.

ow, and the PSP and PS3 menu are pretty much the same.
if you need the icon graphics, or someone else wants to make them.. download the PDF manual for the PSP/PS3 you can extract the vector files from it and that way get pretty much all the graphics you'll need.
(i found that out after i allready did almost all the graphics for my PSP skin)

sorry for the double post, i cant seem to edit my previous one >_<

MacGyver, good work as far as i can see.
i tried running it in XBMC_PC but i only get the selected icon, and the vertical menu isnt working to well either.
My TV is pal 4:3 so i cant test it on my real xbox.
any chance you can upload a few more screenshots, so we/i can see more of what you've got working so far ?

i'm pretty excited about this skin so i hope you'l finish it.
if you've gotten the menu's working, but dont feel like finishing it, i sure as hell will! Big Grin

hope so see a few extra screens soon, thanks

Nice, i like the ps3/psp gui Smile

You probably already know but there are a lot of XMB video's on youtube.
detailed video, with some zoom-ins on icons/animations
good captured video, no shaky cam

here are some of the others screens blaize, if you want to finish it, have at, if you need help, just scream, sometimes I get some free time, and just code things.

i cant wait untill this skin is done Smile

- blaize - 2007-08-21

thanks MacGyver,

you're able to view it like that in XBMC_PC also ?
i'm using the latest tech build, but i dont get the menu to show up like in your screenshots, any idea ?

- MacGyver - 2007-08-21

those are from the pc, but the xbox looks the same.
I think I know whats wrong, just put the media and pal16x9 over a fresh build of PM3.
I think your issue was from the rar structure and the skin.xml, just overwrite a clean PM3 with just those 2 folders and you should be cool. Let me know.

- blaize - 2007-08-21

i tried again, eventhough i did the same the first time.
copied the files over a PM3 skin folder, and it replaced the skin.xml and the media is in the media folder, and the other xml files in the pal19x6 folder.

still dont have the same problem, here's a screen:

XMBox-removed

there is the whole thing, just add PM3s texture.xpr to the media folder.

let me know what you think, btw, it's ONLY for 720p.

- blaize - 2007-08-21

ahh thanks, that did the trick ! Big Grin

looking real nice.
just wondering if you might have a solution for 1 problem:
Image

in the picture you see the red square, that's where the vertical menu should continue.
Do you have a solution for doing that ?
i was thinking that perhaps it was possible to make the highlighted button as big as the green square and just keep the upper half of it transparant, thus overlapping the horizontal menu.
but i have no idea if that's possible.
if it is, then the menu should break up like that, and also create smooth animations for the top icon.

any thoughts ? ( this was a big problem i got stuck with when i was doing my PSP skin )

- shizzle - 2007-08-21

any chance to get this on 4:3?

- blaize - 2007-08-21

dude.. i think it's pretty clear this skin is far from completion, so no 4:3 yet.

but if MacGyver, me or anyone else can come up with a way to get the vertical menu working like with PSP or PS3, then i'll continue this skin for sure.
and i'll start with making a 4:3 version.

so just wait for progress Rolleyes
