sorry, didn't see you'd already answered that.

Try running the network setup wizard, but make sure printer and file sharing are turned OFF.
Then run it again, this time turn file and printer sharing ON. Make sure your workgroup and shares are set up properly. Then reboot your machine and any others that are in your workgroup. I know it sounds crazy, but so is windows file sharing...

Not saying it's going to work...but it's worth taking a crack at it.

Also, make sure you don't have a default username or password set up on XBMC for the SMB Client

Maybe I am wrong, but wasn't there an issue with filesharing with XP HOME.
(iirc home always uses some crypted (or advanced?) smb proto, whereas 2000 and PRO also have a not crypted (simplified?) smb variant??)

So SMB with XP HOME is a no go.
(Or has this been fixed since?)

Rgs H2Deetoo,

I use windows xp home service pack 2 and have no problems with smb shares. Simply share the folder on pc then add source threw the context menu on the xbox. Only time I've ever had trouble is when the share name is over 12 characters.

Yeah, it works with home.

When i had the same problem as you (Could see shares but clicking them gave the "lock preferances" window). I managed to get it working...

The reason, it turned out, that this was happening is that my xbox user account wasn't set correctly in the security and permissions tabs.

It's definatletly (IMHO) related to your network/share settings at the PC side, and is fixable.

Perhaps looking at the XBMC debug log will give some hints, maybe.
