@Kingcole I'm sure there's a filmon support thread that may be a more suitable place to ask.

If you are not using the OSD or subtitles the gui layer is fully transparent, but still requires fetching from sdram which is costly.
The updates over the last couple of days attempt to disable the gui layer when it is known to be fully transparent.
This improves software video decode performance (notably HEVC).

I also noticed HEVC 1080 playback improved dramatically. Great!

Most people need/use subtitles I suppose, so I hope performance with an overlay will keep up.

Often I see a lag just before the first subtitle shows, also on h264, has that something to do with this?

Not so long ago pi3 struggled to decode "simple" 720p hevc, now it does hevc encodes from bluray source 1080p@30fps (by git ffmpeg + git x265) with relatively low cpu load ...
What you already did is truly amazing.

Completely agree with this :-)
Some examples. I am now able to play hevc videos on a Pi 3 full screen, no letterbox, with lots of detail and movement.
1920x1080 (1080p), 31fps encoded with Handbrake with a quality factor of 22RF which is quite acceptable, even close up on a high resolution monitor.
This is about as high as I can go, at this resolution with the quality setting, without occasional missed frames.
1280x720 (720p), 31fps encoded with Handbrake with a quality factor of 16RF which is way higher than I would normally use, again looks great close up on a high resolution monitor.
This is still only using about 50% CPU on the four cores. Even at a quality factor of 12RF the CPUs are still only maxing at about 70%

Much thanks to Popcornmix (Dom), Milhouse and presumably the mysterious John.
Thanks for your continuing hard work.
Regards, Kevin.
PS. I actually use a Slice as my day to day TV media box, so I'm hopefull that Chewitt will be able to get these latest improvements on to that in the future. :-)

No. That has always been present. The first subtitle that appears renders and caches the font required.
Subsequent subtitles will use the cached font so will be quicker.

This is done in the main render thread which is wrong as it can cause video frame drops.
It should really be handled from a background thread where it doesn't interfere with the video.
Part of the ongoing VideoPlayer work is separating the rendering and application threads which may solve this issue.

Curious, is the "Remove GUI layer" for RPI HEVC improvements still in there (elsewhere perhaps) or has it been completely removed at this point for causing issues?

RE: LibreELEC Testbuilds for RaspberryPi (Kodi 18.0) - bleep42 - 2017-05-04

Hi Popcornmix,
I would like to report a bug.
Whenever I try to copy some files from a memory stick to a USB connected disk on my Pi3 Kodi crashes just as it finishes, the files have been transfered ok.
This has been happening for quite a while, it used to be some what random, now it seems to be reliable.
For these crash logs I am using Milhouses 4.11.0, but it happens on the older kernels as well. I have had this crash on my Slice when I'm copying over ethernet as well.
First log is my normal setup, second is with all overclocks removed, just in case. ;-)

If you would like any further info, please let me know.
Regards,
Kevin.

Yes, still present.
Note: commits marked "squash" or "fixup" will typically be squashed into a preceding commit in a subsequent build, so the commit disappearing is expected as code is tidied up.

It doesn't look like anything Pi specific - can you try to reproduce with another Kodi platform running master builds? (e.g. windows/linux)

You're quite right, I tried a x86 Ubuntu install and it does the same.
Presumably I need to report it on a Kodi forum somewhere, where would be the best?

A trac ticket would be best. http://trac.kodi.tv/

Small feedback to #0503:

Firstly, if I want to watch TV programs or listen to music, Spectrum addon error occurs because can not load shared library.

And secondly, switching times between TV channels are slightly longer than before.

I've uploaded a new version of visualization.spectrum to the add-ons folder.

Note that these are just temporary add-on updates until the LE 9.0 repository can be updated with new add-ons (once the situation with latest Kodi is a bit more stable). You'll need to uninstall my add-on and reinstall from the repository (once it is updated) otherwise you'll never receive automatic add-on updates in future.
