Same issue trying to copy to an attached USB stick. Tried the Backup Kodi program add-on, and same issue trying to copy out. How do you do this?

First, don't use ES File Explorer, not only does it cause issues on the Shield, it's just bloatware. If you need a file explorer use X-Plore or Total Commander.

Also, you can NOT write to network mounted shares (Android limitation), but you should have no issues writing to network shares directly, you shouldn't even need to write to it as a mounted share. And for USB drives you can only write to the apps folder on the drive (by default, also a Android limitation) without the app asking permission first, like Total Commander.

It's not a "issue" it's an Android limitation.

Tried Xplore and same issue... gave me an error that some files didn't copy when trying to copy .spmc folder to USB stick. In fact, no files got copied. But, thankfully, like I last noted, once I allowed Shield to be found/shareable on my network, I could easily copy the .spmc folder to my PC and in fact directly to my 2nd Shield.

RE: nVidia Shield TV (2015 & 2017 Models) - Tinwarble - 2017-01-25

And where did you try to copy them? Root of the drive?

As I said, you can only copy files to the apps folder on the drive, /your_storage/Android/data/apps_folder/

RE: nVidia Shield TV (2015 & 2017 Models) - hdmkv - 2017-01-25

Ah... so, there needs to be a directory structure like that on the USB stick? ... basically mimicking how it is on Shield's internal storage?

RE: nVidia Shield TV (2015 & 2017 Models) - Tinwarble - 2017-01-25

It should be created automatically, once you plug in a USB drive Android should create /Android/data/ then when you first run the app (after you plug in the drive) the app folder will be created. Apps only have full permission in that folder by default.

If you want full permission to the entire drive, install Total Commander which will ask for permission and allow you to write to the root of the drive.

EDIT: And as I said, this is not a Shield specific issue, this is due to Android storage permissions.

I had to make a minor change to my post here: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=304226&pid=2505292#pid2505292

That's all I can say for now. Wink

So, the Shield Hub will be gone?

BTW, I have no problem with X-plore writing to external device custom folders on the Shield 2017. I don't remember giving any explicit permission.

Also, looks like recommended setting were updated...

"Updated as of Shield Experience 5.0.1 and SPMC 16.5.5.

Note: with SPMC 16.5.x, you must disable MediaCodec (Surface) to use upscaling or deinterlacing. However, if you disable MediaCodec (Surface), then HDR content will not be displayed in HDR."

shield experience upgrade 5.0 online for shield 2015

RE: nVidia Shield TV (2015 & 2017 Models) - bluestang - 2017-01-26

...And 5.02 for Sheild 2017 (and possibly 2015).

Hard to make heads or tails with all those redundant threads over there.

Does SPMC still work with you guys after the update? I read here that some people experience crashes in SPMC after the update.
