It has been known for a while. I am not sure why it is being discussed as something new Smile Shows that are in 4K will stream 1080p HEVC. If you see a bitrate of 6300kbps for 1080p, then it is more than likely streaming HEVC.

Edit: It seems they are talking about low bitrate HEVC streaming.

Well, for me it was new. I didn't know if 1080p content is streamed in HEVC on my TV or Shield.
Don't know what do you mean ,,Shows that are in 4K will stream 1080p HEVC", suppose will stream in 4k HEVC?
On my TV app (Samsung HU7500) all 4k content is streamed at 15.26Mbps, TV supports HEVC. Never saw 6300mbps for 1080p.
Same clip (War Machine) on Shield has 5,53Mbps on 1080p and same 15.26Mbp...

What I meant is, if the show is native 4K, then it would have a HEVC stream for 1080p also. When you connect the Shield to a 1080p TV, such shows will stream in 1080p HEVC and they are usually 6300kbps. 1080p AVC streams max out at 5800kbps.

That is not a setting that I would suggest for the Shield.

This is what I was guessing from what I was seeing. It makes the Shield more difficult to use than most since you have to use the correct color space based on what you're watching. I only use 10-bit when watching 4k/HDR netflix or Amazon.

Is there something inherent to the Shield or SPMC that prohibits it from writing to a mounted network share? I ask because I have two 2017 Shields and on both I have mounted a network share conatining my media and they can both read from it fine but neither can write it or any other share I mount. Running Kodi on a Chromebox does not have this problem with the exact same share. All other computers/phones in the house can also write to the share without problem.

The Shield can't write to a mounted network share. Wait for the 5.2 update (hopefully soon)...

Read the first post - Known Issues.

EDIT: Write to mounted storage is implemented in 5.2, but it requires the app to be white listed to gain access. I wasn't able to find out if Kodi has been white listed, but if it's not it should get added next update.

Do you know if it's a dynamic white list that can be updated without a whole point update? Seems like a better way to do it.

Don't know, but from what I was told it sounds like it requires an update.

But they weren't sure if Kodi had already been white listed or not already and are suppose to get back to me. Though, by that time I'll most likely be able to test it for myself.

Is there a simple way to add infrared to the newer Shield?

I just updated to 5.2 preview and still can't write to NAS in Kodi. Bummer.

Sent from my XT1585

RE: nVidia Shield TV (2015 & 2017 Models) - UPDATED: Jan 26 2017 - maxtherabbit - 2017-06-09

Just got the 5.2 update on my Shield. I'm not in the preview program so it looks like the update is ready to roll out.

It seems like the problems with the remote control are fixed now. The volume slider doesn't jump up and down by itself anymore and neither does video playback pause randomly. Video playback seemed fine on an interlaced hd channel. 25 fps video playback from streaming apps at 50 hz also seemed smoother than before.

Most of the update seems to revolve around Plex, but I don't use that because its inferior to Kodi.

What happened to Google assistant support? I thought that was meant to come about now?
