@Fargusr,

Q. I need full HD Audio passthrough support including Multichannel (>2.0) PCM output of 16/24bit/192kHz FLAC ?
(NOTE: all devices using an Android OS have 16bit Multichannel 48/96kHz PCM Audio output limitations)
Read NVIDIA Shield - Multichannel Hi-Res audio limitations for extra information.
  • WeTek Hub / Play2 (LibreELEC - 16bit/192kHz)
  • ODROID C2 (LibreELEC - 16bit/192kHz)
  • Vero 4K (OSMC- 16bit/192kHz)
  • Various cheap AMLogic S905 devices running LibreELEC Kodi (16bit/192kHz)
  • Chromeboxes (24bit/192kHz)
  • Intel Hardware, inc. Macs running Windows.(24bit/192kHz except Apollo/Kaby Lake)

That nVIDIA table is actually misleading. It is mixing up the actual output and what an app supports internally. There is no 32-bit PCM audio support in HDMI. Linear PCM is 24-bit max for IEC 60958 stream.

This is what I said 6 months ago: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=304226&pid=2511183#pid2511183

There is actually one Android device that outputs multichannel 24-bit/192kHz PCM audio. I am not going to give free publicity for it because that output is only from the native music player. It doesn't work in Kodi/SPMC.

RE: nVidia Shield TV (2015 & 2017 Models) - UPDATED: Jun 9, 2017 - Fargusr - 2017-07-27

Thx for the info. So no android devices can play back hi res multi channel unless it's bit streamed is that correct?
Guess I'm shit out of luck for playing HI res surround audio which is one of the main reason's I bought the shield. I'm going to return it.

That is really depressing. Every time I try a google software product and stick my neck out I get shit on. Shame on me for falling for it again. 16 bit 48hz multi ch audio limitation in 2017 is a joke especially for a 199.00 dollar media center.

You are not the only one this Gotcha has happened to with an Android device. The other one is poor quality 1080p > 4K picture upscaling and no Android App 1080p/4K resolution switching.

What users do not realise is you are paying for convenience and usability with Android TV and Google's Android OS - so some sacrifices have to be made.

That actually looks like bigger numbers marketing techno babble from NVIDIA. Wink

wrxtasy. Yah I don't have a 4k tv yet but that would really bum me out too!

Yep. The fun part is that, with the addition of assistant, you'll actually be able to ask it to do the coffee, though [emoji14]

I like Android TV for its easy to use Apps - but I've come to the conclusion that if you want 4K HDR and seamless, hands off high quality upscaled 1080p video streaming as well from the likes of Netflix and Amazon etc then you are better off using a modern Smart 4K TV's - existing Apps.

For me Picture quality trumps the speed of a device, particularly as a TV screen size gets bigger.

SPMC/Kodi can play .MKA files right?

I don't have many hi-res multi-channel audio files, maybe Pink Floyd's Immersion rips I did to listen on headphones at work using Foobar2000. I was thinking of doing them as DTS-HD 24/48 or 96 and then inserting them into a .MKA container to see if it works. I see no reason it won't. Won't be as small as a FLAC file though lol.

Yah just tried that it wouldn't play

It's not just Nvidia, it's been a trend in mobile http://www.androidauthority.com/why-you-dont-want-that-32-bit-dac-667621/

EDIT: Link corrected Wink

I found a solution/work around for hi res surround on Sheild TV. It's tedious but works. Take your 5.1 flac. Export to 6 mono wavs. Encode to trueHD or DTS-HD. Then using mkvtoolnix create a mka file for each song. You can then bitstream in kodi to your reciever. voila! 96hz 24 bit 5.1 surround. Played over network.

^ That's what I said. So it did work. Good to hear and thanks for trying it. I didn't get time to try, but now I know I won't be wasting time when I do get around to doing it to my handful of files Wink

If you have 'Adjust Display Refresh rate' enabled remember to set a delay of aroumd 5-6 secods so that both video and audio sync better

That should be emphasised as it clearly resolves a lot of 'atmos' passthrough in combination with refresh rate switching problems Smile Thx for the tip!

RE: nVidia Shield TV (2015 & 2017 Models) - UPDATED: Jun 9, 2017 - BluHD - 2017-07-31

I have the Marantz 1607 coupled up to an LG OLED and have had Zero problems with any Sync issues although i do use SPMC and as above have a delay setting of around 6 seconds for any HD audio track and it works every time without fail

It is already emphasized in the very fist post, if people would read it, under Known Issues.

Quote:There is an issue if you have frame rate switching and audio pass-through enabled which may cause stuttering or lose of audio. If you encounter this set the playback delay in Kodi/SPMC to 2.5 seconds. The 2.5 sec delay should work for most users, however, it may require more or less time depending on your specific setup.

In Kodi go to - Settings > System > Display > Delay after change of refresh rate
In SPMC go to - Settings > Video > Playback > Pause during refresh rate change

The delay, however, is different for different people and may require more or less time.
