With default widget or Skin Helper Service widget for recently added ?
If you want to regenerate your thumbs you can delete userdata/Thumbnails folder.

As I've already said there is already submenus.
I must have doing something wrong then. I use the vertical minimized menu. Following what you said, I used the categories widgets to define my submenu items, and they did appear, but appeared on the horizontal sequence of items on top, separated from the vertical menu on the left.

You have 2 solutions : Download all repo and retrieve strings.po file or copy all content from strings.po in your text editor and save file with .po extension
