Yes it can but I think it will highly depend on the addon itself. I did manage to add widgets from IAGL (Internet archive game launcher addon). Give me an addon you have in mind. I can do a test for you.

Steps
>Go to "Settings"
>"Skin"
>"Home Menu"
>"Customize main menu"
>You can add a new menu item for this addon (the one you want to create widgets for) and its widgets or use an existing menu. In my screenshot above I used an existing menu called progams.
>"Set type of widgets" for the menu item you added or selected above.
>"Widgets to personalize"
>Select "Lists (upto 8 items)" I find it better than "Vertical panel (1 item)
>Give it a name
>Click on "Select widget 1" just below the new name you created above
>Scroll down the list until you find "Add-on >"
>Choose from "Program>" or from "Video add-on>" etc depending on what type of addon you want to create the widget for. The Youtube addon for example is a video addon so I selected Video add-on. If your addon is a music addon select Music add-on instead.

My response may not be exactly what you are looking for but try these settings see if you like them.
> Go to skin settings
>Home Menu
>Turn on "Minimize main menu"
>Turn on "Show item label on top"
This will minimize the menu to just icons, when focused the menu text will show at the top not at the side as you wanted.

Hello.
I wanna create a widget on homescreen, that shows all files from a specific folder. But i can't find the right widget for that.
For example:
I added D:\Movies to videosources. I found the widget to add it.
But i want that the widget shows only files from D:\Movies\Subfolder.
I don't want to add D:\Movies\Subfolder to videosources, too. It makes no sense for me, because of D:\Movies is already there.
Is it possible with custom entrys? What code do i need?

If you could set smart playlists as widgets your problem would be solved.
I've sent some PR to include "path" as a filter and edit my widgets links to include this filter. It works like a charm.

Thanks. It's working, but it doesn't shows movie posters.
Defined as posters.
And if i go the other way:
Adding D:\Movies\Subfolder to library, the widget shows cropped posters with filename text under the cropped poster.
The widget recent movies works. The posters are full sized.
