I use a usb dongle by Flirc to solve that problem. You first plug it into your PC's usb port and run their app to program the keys on your remote. When that's finished, plug the dongle into your Pi to start controlling Kodi with your remote.

these are cheap ($5.80 US)... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-FM4-Magic-2-4G-Wireless-Remote-Controller-for-Android-TV-Box-Projector-W1Z2-/322490356732

and work great ! (don't worry that the ebay ad says 'Android' ... they work with Raspberry Pi, PC and PS4 no drivers or BS)

have bought 2 of them ... one for parents RPi2 and another for a friend with a RPi3

just plug the dongle in and it works Smile

only button that needed mapping was the "Context Menu" button .. which is super easy using Keymap Editor Addon

http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:Keymap_Editor

all the other buttons eg. Navigation, Volume, Back, Ok, Home, Power work straight out of the box Smile

Or if you're comfortable with DIY, get an ir receiver diode and the wires and hook it up to the GPIO.

There are various tutorials on the net on how to do it, and the total cost of the parts are about £4.

For a few $ more get something like this. I use it instead of my tv remote (over CEC) for added functionality

look for a seller that does .. (the link was just an example)

search ebay or google for "Mini FM4 Magic 2.4G Wireless Remote"

I have one of those Smile

prefer to use a remote where you don't have to look down to see what button to press (sure, directional pad is easy without looking .... but the finding the letters "without looking" is more difficult, sure the backlight helps, but you still have to look)

RE: simple remote for pi 2 - Sholander - 2017-08-23

Agree, but on tv remote you don't have letters at all. If you did, you'd also have to look down to use them Wink

For convenience I have remapped my own usual_tv_remote_buttons and can use this mini combo easily without looking at it.

Looks handy as a keyboard.
Looks to need too many hands to be a remote. Wink

FWIW I have one of these that I'm fairly happy with - remote on top, keyboard on the back. It's still only ever a backup to an mce or a harmony for me though.

Exactly.

It it a very cool little keyboard ... but it's sooo much easier using a 'Remote Control' where you remember where all the buttons are with your eyes shut.

... and you don't need to put your beer coffee down.

Then search eBay UK. You can find loads on there. I have this same one and it works perfectly.
