How to add multiple folders from same external HDD as different sources - viperlogic - 2017-10-24

Device: Nvidia Shield 2017
OS: Andriod 7
Kodi: Krypton 17.4 and Leia nightly's

How do I add multiple folders (eg movies, 3d, kids) from same external HDD as different sources so I can then add them as separate main menu (Estuary Mod v1/v2) items?

Anytime I go to add a source or add videos, my external HDD is already listed as a source but if I go to add source or video and browse its not available to choose.

How did you add the source originally and what did you set as the source? Did you assign the entire drive? eg... you set f:\ as your source?

Make a separate root folder for each of the sources:
f:\movies\3D
f:\movies\kids
f:\movies\parents
f:\movies\whatever

But, you could probably also create a smart playlist for the 3D videos.

On fresh install of Kodi (on Nvidia Shield) my external USB HDD is already added! Is this something unique for Nvidia Shield?

My external HDD folder structure is already laid out similarly

Gonna try that later today when back home

Just found this https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/996379/shield-tv/adding-local-media-on-mynshield/1/ looks like its a limitation currently on Nvidia Shield regards add sources

No, it's not a limitation of the Shield.

Can you add a folder as a source, so it shows up in videos/files or music/files?

Unable to add a folder as a source

You don't add external drives as "source".  They already show up as a source, you just need to set the folder as content.

This is just how it works on Android.

As I stated, you don't add external drives as "source". They should already appear as a source under Videos/Files. You just navigate to the folder, pull up the context menu and "Set content".

Even though your external drive is already a source it will not show up in the library until you set the content for it. You can either "Set content" for the entire drive or for individual folders.

I don't recall ever seeing that limitation - and it is a limitation if you can't add folders as separate sources - on android before.  Is it a Nougat 'feature'?
It might have passed me by - I usually chuck across my existing sources.xml and then use pathsubs so I can't remember the last time I actually tried to set a source in android.

Isn't "set content" different than actually adding a folder as a source? Yes it could be argued that its added to the library (if selected) but if some customisation is desired eg main menu items to specific folders.

The long winded discussion in the link above goes into same, adding a folder on an external HDD as a source is not possible on nvidia shield at present

It's been that way since Marshmallow and is a result of how the Storage Access Framework works and how Kodi sees external drives.

Yes, set content and add source are different things, but again, that's how it works on Android and is not specific to the Shield.

I'm going to play around later adding folders manually by specifying the path and also playlists to see if I can get a desired outcome.

You can, but only in the File Manager and you need to use the drive ID.  Or you can add it via the sources.xml

Code:
<sources>
   <video>
       <default pathversion="1"></default>
       <source>
           <name>ACTION</name>
           <path pathversion="1">/storage/9EDABF35DABF0913/Movies/Action/</path>
           <allowsharing>true</allowsharing>
       </source>
   </video>

</sources>

So for my PNY drive it would be /storage/9EDABF35DABF0913/Movies/Action to have just the Action folder as a source.
