Building Home System with 34 Clients - megacrypto - 2008-04-06

Dear All,

I'm very new here, found this through a thread in the MediaPortal forum. I have been using MP for some time now in my own house (along side with a Dreambox for DVB viewing) and it works nicely. But, right now i have this project which is providing a system for a house that will have possible 34 end points. And until now i have been looking into MP + Dreamboxes but then again the cost will be very high (because of the HTPC's that will be running MP) and at this moment MP's TV server is not a very stable one.

So, my question is, and excuse me if i didn't research the topic that much, but im kind of a jam in time. Is XBMC a possible solution?

I used to run VDR for about a year (because it was the best system to make use of my Nexus-S card) but when it crashed i didn't have the patience to build it again so i bought the Dreambox to take care of that.

Let me give you a quick brief on what we are looking for, basically a STB that can play all types of media (Video inc. HD-DVDs and has 5.1 capability, Music, DVB-S). There will be a media server in the house to serve all the clients, and most likely one or two dreamboxes to share their subscription cards on the STBs. The house 1500m2 (3 floors x 500m2 each).

I read a few threads on how to work XBMC with mythTV or Dreambox, but im looking to find the bost and most cost effective solution to implement.

We have a few more opportunities for similar projects (if this one succeseeds), and we can build our own stb's if it comes to it. I was looking at miniITX's such as the Kino-690AM2 which is based on the AMD 690G chipset. Of course the best solution will be if we dont need to have the STB's have their own tuners in them and instad read the streams from a tv server (which i think i read here that this could be done via a dreambox) but then how many dreamboxes will we need to have to server 34 points. the house actually has 4 occupants which will not be watching 34 different points at the same time, but if we are asked to provide service for 34 points, then we have to provide that.

I would really appreciate your feedback and help in this matter.

best regards

mega

MythTV backend (and XBMC frontend) is a better option IMHO however it still in early development, so try it out and judge for yourself:

MythTV will be the reference backend for this, then later other developers are free to add withever backend they like.

There is another project out there that offers the one backend with many thin client solutions called LinuxMCE. I like the interface of XBMC more however LinuxMCE allows all the thin clients to simply network boot and be diskless. It's based off the Pluto Home project. I would prefer XMBC instead myself but if you're looking for options that might work.

LinuxMCE is like the exact polar opposite of XBMC. It has an absolutely horrible interface. It does offer greater functionality, particularly in home automation. But I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Amen, looked at it and it wants to be the be all end all for your home. A pretty serious aspiration but everyone I've spoken to who has fooled with it has come away frustrated. They keep working on it but smaller bites might work out better. Worth a shot and they would probably love some help but XBMC meets my needs better. <shrug>

I would put in my two cents of effort however pm me for it.

I have not built a larger 34 client system but I am sure I could lend a helping of information.
I have built a few systems even home systems as large as 10 stations with all kinds of cool tricks using XBMC

You may have use of what's written in this thread (from post 13 and what user impmonkey is describing).

I don't understand half of what he's writing, but something tells me you may Smile

Edit/in addendum: You might find more useful posts and contributors over at the Hardware for HTPC Discussion subforum.

I maintain that I wrote a helpful and insightful post, and hope I'll still get my cookies Rolleyes

Look for doggo - Eatmeimadanish - 2011-11-29

doggo will be released soon, which will resolve all of these issues, and use XBMC as its front end interface.

... oh yeah and its free.
