Kodi purpose - scabal - 2017-12-06

(Serious question):
So what good is Kodi without covenant or exodus? Aren't they the only reason anyone downloads kodi.

If I am wrong, please let me know why anyone would bother with Kodi. Thank you

RE: Kodi purpose - Karellen - 2017-12-06

Yes, I will take it as a serious question.

Kodi is a media player. It is used to play the media that is stored on your HDD and Optical Disks via stub files. Personally I have a large collection of legally purchased Movies, TV Shows and Music. I have also added a Tuner Card to my setup, so it also works like a TiVO type device. I turn on my TV, and I never have to switch out of Kodi. Everything is just a few clicks away.

Yep, I know you may scoff and make some disparaging remark on the "stupid" use I have described, but that is its primary design, and there are millions of users that use it that way. All you other users, have just recently hopped on the band wagon some time between now and the last 18 months, and started downloading add-ons to watch pirated content. The fact that you can do that is attributable to the flexible and well thought out design of Kodi. But, just because you can do that, does not mean we want any part of it. We cannot, nor will we want to, control what you do with Kodi. You are all adults and can make your own decisions. We just don't want those decisions filtering into our forum.

Hope that goes some small way in explaining Kodi. The official blurb follows...

Quote:Kodi (formerly XBMC) is a free and open source media player application developed by the XBMC/Kodi Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium. Kodi is available for multiple operating-systems and hardware platforms, featuring a 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. It allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet.

And it needs to be said that Kodi does not care how many users it has. It is not a factor in any discussion the Team Members have. It does not care if the userbase suddenly jumps to a competitors product. It does not care if the userbase triples. Kodi is a hobby project, and the developers create the software for themselves primarily, but are generous enough to share it with the world.

Its like saying „internet is for porn“ and asking what else someone would use it for. Wink

There are other reasons to use the internet?

Damn.

RE: Kodi purpose - Atreyu - 2017-12-06

I use Kodi in a most peculiar way...as a centralized media center for my local content and liveTV...

RE: Kodi purpose - da-anda - 2017-12-06

I use Kodi for my local content, to watch Blu-rays, live TV, to access the free content local TV stations provide over the internet, to watch other free content on the internet via add-ons from the official repository (like youtube, game trailers, reviews, documentaries, TED talks, ...) to listen to my subscribed music streaming service and to watch content from my subscribed video streaming platforms (Netflix, Amazon). It's the central hub of my day to day entertainment.

RE: Kodi purpose - speedwell68 - 2017-12-06

I use Kodi to tie together all of my media (legally sourced) and distribute it throughout my house.

Someone, I can't remember who, once said they used Kodi as a toaster. I'd like to figure out how to do that, then I think my life would be complete.

I am still figuring out how to set Kodi up to bring me my coffee. I was promised that would work!

I am developing (mainly in my head so far) an interface for kodi to interact with home assistant, so your wish may come true...

I began using Plex for the same reasons some time ago.  It's on my Win10 PC, Fire Stick, and Roku boxes (4) and works great doing what you've stated above for Kodi.  Is the any compelling reason I'd want to consider changing?  Thank you.

No, if you're happy with your setup and don't miss anything, why should you switch to something else? Also, Kodi won't run on your Roku boxes as Roku doesn't alllow native C apps

RE: Kodi purpose - FXB78 - 2017-12-08

Plex is actually a Kodi (XBMC) fork which went in a slightly different direction many years ago. Both serve their intended purpose very well, it's just a case of whatever works for you Smile

Thank you.
