Faster Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ - Milhouse - 2018-03-17

The Kodi FLIRC case is a very good addition and can help drop temperatures by 15-20C.

Removing any plastic casing fully is also a good method for dropping the temp as I experienced. Smile
The FLIRC casing would be another option.

Also worth noting that the Flirc case will soon be shipping with two thermal pads now - with a new one for the 3B+.  AIUI the current pads are OK - but because the SoC is a little taller, a slightly thinner thermal pad is preferable.

Quote:Our case is compatible with the new Pi3 B+. Just needs a new thermal pad. They should be ready next week and two pads will ship in all boxes, one for 3B+, and one for older generations.

RE: Faster Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ - noggin - 2018-03-17

Got my 3B+ this morning.  It definitely feels a bit snappier, and the WiFi improvement is also noticeable.   SD MPEG2 with advanced deinterlacing is working really well without the MPEG2 licence key (just as well as ordering them through the Pi Store at the moment is quite challenging... Delete your cookies and don't use the instant PayPal option and you are more likely to be successful with a codec purchase..)

Great news! I’l wait till nect week then😁

RE: Faster Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ - speedwell68 - 2018-03-17

With a 3B+ is extra cooling needed if I don't intend to overclock or play H265/HEVC video?  HEVC would be nice but in the first instance I won't be bothering as I will still have 1Bs and a 2B on my network.  I would like a FLIRC case but I can't find any for sale in the UK at a sensible price.

Awesome, thank you.  I did not realise that you could get them without the Kodi branding.

A question about the FLIRC case.  Where do the GPIO cables exit the case?

I'd always suggest going for the Kodi branded version - as it helps the Kodi foundation - but I can't see them available so easily in the UK.

The Flirc case has a slot in the base that allows a GPIO ribbon cable to exit, however it may be a tight squeeze with some IDC connectors.

Yes - this is definitely the way to go.

Raspberry Pi 3/libreelec/kodi/Flirc Kodi case.... perfect appliance like system. For me, in the U.K., at least, able to support local and FOSS= awesomeness!!!!

I only have 3 GPIO wires for my Ambilight, so that should be fine.  I was hoping for a Kodi branded just so it pays something back.  I am considering a case with a built in cooling fan and heatsinks, does anyone have any experience?  Something like this...

RE: Faster Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ - DarrenHill - 2018-03-17

I used to run a Pi 3 in a plusberry pi case with a fan plus heat sinks, and it was prone to overheating. But since switching to the Flirc case it hasn't had a single problem.

Would wholeheartedly recommend them, Jason has made a superb item in that one.

RE: Faster Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ - speedwell68 - 2018-03-17

Thanks for all the input.  I am going to get the whole kit from Farnell and get the FLIRC case aswell.  It makes it a bit more expensive than if I got it from eBay, but I think will be better off in the long run.  I will experiment with HEVC and if I can get it reliable I will slowly upgrade all of my RPIs.
