Reading through all of this it seems the practical choice for a good 4K HDR box is still between a Vero or a N2+.

Yep pretty much.   N2/N2+ seems to be the go-to box if you can get one.

If you need Dolby Vision playback then you are on to the Realtek RTD1619DR boxes.

I’ve really been wanting Dolby Vision playback, but it’s generally been an impossibility. How are those Realtek boxes? A search of that chipset didn’t turn up much discussion on the forum.

I have a Zidoo Z9X. Playback is great and supports pretty much every video format. Video quality is as good or better than my N2.

I do prefer the overall user experience of Kodi on my Odroid N2 but HDR playback does not support Dolby Vision.

Could you elaborate a bit on that? From what I read you can install Kodi (might have problems with the internal player) or Zidoos fork ZDMC (might be incompatible with skins/addons + latest is 19.4). I would really like to have Dolby Vision playback as well as the Kodi experience and I ended with the Z9X as the most fitting player, considering a budget of 2-300 euros.

I have a Vero 4k+, an Apple TV 4k and now a Shield Pro 2019. The latter plays DV with Kodi without problems, some movies do have a red push. All audio formats are supported via passthrough. It is a very good Kodi box, but the Vero has a better picture quality. But that you only can tell if you have them both...

If only Apple TV could do audio better, than it would be the perfect one-for-all box. Allthough I don't know if Infuse actually can play DV mkv's or that it just grabs the HDR10 layer and the ATV converts that to DV.

what hardware do i need to play DV mkv files?

I used the ZDMC fork a long time ago on other devices and did not care for how it integrated with the video player used for playback.    So I never tried it on the Z9X.   I stick with the Home Theater 4.0 app.

It is possible the integration with the video player is better on the Z9X.   I recall things like watched status and resume location were not transferred back to ZDMC.  That was a long time ago now though.

I don't think you can go wrong testing it out.

how well does Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max play local mkv files shared via SMB files that is 4k 10bit HDR HEVC with 8 channel audio?

RE: 4K HDR10 - State of Play thread - important media player limitations. - looun - 2022-05-30

Fire TV Stick 4K Max  support only DD+ 7.1

how well does it play the video type and resolution mention
it is play over WIFI SMB share... local file

-4k 10bit HEVC HDR

also can I use passthrough to get 5.1 channel ie -enable Dolby digital (AC3) transcoding (even though file says it has 8CH audio) via hdmi with this device?
Note: I got old AV receiver that has SPDIF etc..
so the SPDIF/optical cable goes from the TV into the AV receiver etc..

Are you saying you can now play DV files via Kodi ? If so, that contradicts Post #1 of this thread:-

"Playback DV video with Dolby TrueHD/Atmos audio on the 2019 Nvidia Shield using Plex. (Kodi playback does NOT work (click))"

I have a Vero 4K+ myself which is perfect for me except for the lack of DV support, so I'm thinking about getting a Shield.
I also have Plex running inside Docker on a Synology DS920 which should be good enough for DV playback with TrueHD / Atmos on the Shield if I decide to get one. But I'd prefer to use KODI.

Kodi is able to reproduce DV using these builds  https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=360018  (tested on my Shield 2019 Pro)

Credit Apple for trying to widen compatibility, but for Kodi use, if you don't have a HLG-capable display & HLG-capable media player, iPhone filmed videos won't look right. I'll try PLEX via Shield TV and see if my Vizio displays it okay as DV. Guessing no as this new DV may not be backwards compatible.

Some AMLogic devices do Rec2020 HLG->Rec2020 HDR10 conversion (it's a reasonably straightforward EOTF conversion, with no gamut conversion required) if their connected displays support HDR10 but not HLG, when you play HLG content.  (Think the S905X3 and S922X both do it in CoreElec)

I'm now using the CoreELEC Kodi v19 - Matrix Beta builds + ODROID N2, and with the iPhone12 Pro HLG DV clips I get CE Kodi saying it's outputting HLG BT.2020nc and my Panny OLED has a HDR(HLG) On Screen popup.

Can you add theses devices to front page and how well it plays 4k 10bit HDR HEVC etc
-Firestick TV 4k Max,
-odroid N2+ etc.. (N2 is no longer selling so should update this to the newer model anyway)

Also add what the oldest Intel CPU that can do 4k playback smoothly?
BTW is it i5 6500 that is the oldest CPU that can do this?

@wrxtasy hasn't been here for a couple of years. I messaged him to check he was OK but didn't get a response. Hope he is. Pandemic has been rough on many people.

Sad. Was gonna check this thread for some pointers on the Chromecast 2020 which is finally coming to Europe. Noticed some other things not up to date and was gonna ask about that. But I guess RIP @wrxtasy.
