v18 - Choppy video playback - DugieHowsa - 2019-03-14

OS:  Linux (LibreELEC 9.0.1 x86_64)
Linux Kernel Version:  4.19.23
Kodi Version:  18.1
File format:  1080p/MPEG-2 , .ts file

I have noticed that ever since upgrading to Kodi v18, certain video playback has been choppy.  The latest example is the following file:

/storage/dvr/Arrow (2012)/Season 07/Arrow (2012) - S07E15 - Training Day.ts

The video is not choppy during the entire playback of the file, but certain portions.  It appears to happen mostly while there is camera motion.

RE: Choppy video playback - VanHecke28 - 2019-03-15

I am having the same issue with all my movies on my external hard drive. They all are choppy after I updated to the new version of Kodi. I even reinstalled it and changed all the settings back and still the same thing.

RE: Choppy video playback - Large Marge - 2019-03-16

I had the same problem.  Somehow my Samsung TV graphics setting on my pc was changed to 29 fps?  I changed it back to 60 and solved the problem.

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately it looks like my issue is caused by something else. I checked the refresh rate under Settings -> System -> Display, and it was already set at 60.00.

RE: Choppy video playback - Davidsilva - 2019-03-18

Exact same problem here, posted it in libreelec forum here https://forum.libreelec.tv/thread/14884-local-playback-has-buffering/

RE: Choppy video playback - jbinkley60 - 2019-03-21

I am seeing similar issues on MPEG2 interlaced file since since moving to 18.  The workaround I have in place right now is that I have the player adjust frame rate to source set to on/off and am using the VAAPI-Bob deinterlace setting.  I didn't have this problem with 17.  It is, as you say, when there is fast camera motion you see the stuttering without this workaround..

RE: Choppy video playback - DugieHowsa - 2019-03-31

Issue appears to be isolated to Linux/LibreELEC, as I cannot replicate the issue in the Windows or the Android version.

I have hopped over to the LibreELEC forum to see if I can get assistance there.

Raspi Modell B Rev 2
OS:  Linux (OSMC)
Kodi Version:  18.3
File format:  720p/MPEG-4 , .mp4

Solved this in great by switching refresh rate from 60Hz to 50Hz in the GUI.

RE: v18 - Choppy video playback - fahdalizahid - 2020-03-22

I turned on the  Settings->Player->Sync Playback to display. Running good with 60HZ  refresh.

RE: v18 - Choppy video playback - gabrielidok - 2020-04-18

I have the same problem, even with very low resolution videos.
Kodi: 18.4 (built by Gentoo Linux), standalone and fullscreen modes, using X11.
HW: Intel® Core™2 CPU T7200; 3GB RAM; digital output for both audio (passthrough) and video
Tested: all that was mentioned in this thread (refresh rate and sync to playback basically)

I would appreciate any ideas!

Gabriel

RE: v18 - Choppy video playback - gabrielidok - 2020-04-20

UPDATE: For whoever bumps into this thread, this is how I finally fixed the issue: I manually added all my display's supported resolutions to the whitelist in Settings->System->Display.  I will try to figure out why Kodi doesn't do this on its own, since the driver announces all supported resolutions.

RE: v18 - Choppy video playback - RunBubbaRun - 2020-08-27

I have the same issue with this file. It stutters playing on 60hz but when I manually change it to 29,97 fps it plays smooth.
Adjust frame rate doesn't change it to 29,97 although I have whitelisted 1080p @29,97 fps. I don't know why. Match frame rate also doesn't switch to 29,97 fps.
When I look in Kodi at the codec information it says 59,94 fps. Strange.

RE: v18 - Choppy video playback - pm80mk2 - 2020-09-06

I have stuttering video too. Stuttering is when field of view is panning. Video is DVD
VOB 480p display says 1920x1080 60fps.

The resolution looks super, but video stutters. Switched off Nvidia upscalling. Video also stutters.

Latest nvidia shield and latest KODI for android.

Hi, I'm running  a Minix android box and I too am having the jittering while panning issue.  It is slight, but it highly annoying.  Stepping back 10 seconds, and the jitter will not appear in the same spot so it is not the file.  All my files are suffering from this .MP4, .MKV & .AVI.

Version 17.0 did not have this issue and I'm dumping 18.9
