Installing Kodi on (over) an existing Tivo Box? - forrie - 2019-07-09

Perhaps this may sound absurd, but I'd be really interested in whether it's possible to install Kodi (or something similiar) over an existing Tivo box.  I have a few older versions and a newer Bolt box.

Kodi needs a supported operating system to install. IIRC Tivo is proprietary software, so you would not be able to install Kodi.

I haven't touched anything Tivo in years, but unless they changed something, they use Linux.

However, they don't make things particularly easy. They're such a dirty player in open source that they've become the basis for the term "Tivoization" -- which basically means you have the source code, but no means of installing it to the hardware.

In any case, there would be a huge job in getting adequate control over the hardware to make it a practical device for running kodi, or anything else.

My advice is to just trashbin the tivos. They're big clunky boxes with weak CPUs, little RAM, and very limited options for hardware video decoding. The effort that you would have to put into making it work adequately would be better applied to doing odd jobs around the neighborhood and buying a cheap SBC to run kodi on -- well and easily.

This is a fairly bit interesting topic for me, because where I live there is only Cogeco available. But again, I do live in a fairly small town in Canada.
