"Account kodi" to sync preferences - Teodoro777 - 2019-07-14

It would be nice to be able to create a "kodi account", so as to save preferences, add-ons and various customizations. So it's much more convenient when using multiple devices

Who would be hosting this, and where? Given how many installs of Kodi there are around the world (it's in the millions) that's quite a data-load.

Not to mention the potential implications for privacy and that whole can of worms...

You can do a fair bit with path substitutions to enable sharing settings between machines.

Maybe a local backup to export where you want can be a good start. Or in extreme cases you can make a connection to your Google drive..

+1 for the part about "kodi account" for higher easy of use convenience of login with multiple users on multiple devices.

However, I would be satisfied with a much more basic single sign-on (SSO) user-authentication service for online log-in with your personal online account to start with to make multiple users accounts on Kodi instances in your house easier and more manageable, somewhat similar to how an Plex.tv account works for its end-users.

I think that a basic single sign-on user-authentication service like GitHub's OAuth would be more than enough to start with, and regardless I do not think that the XBMC Foundation should be storing any sensitive personal data like your home address which could get them into trouble with GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) laws in the European Union.

Like most other online single sign-on services, GitHub's OAuth implementation supports the standard authorization code grant type

Would be very nice if Team Kodi could somehow manage to just re-use the existing database for this Community Forum so we could use our existing user-accounts (and password or a pin-code) from here to login to local Kodi, but unlike Plex allow the users to set and show an alias locally.

We have thought about it, mainly from a addon store perspective so you could browse addon's from the listing on the website and be able to install the addon from the browser in a similar manner to the mobile device app stores. However while an interesting idea we are simply too limited in resource to pursue anything like this at this time.
