You unloaded on the poor fella for nothing! Smile

I am curious though if the new shield upscaler works as well as Apple TV (for Kodi as well as other apps)
Or does N2 perform better. Wish someone who owned all three could share their thoughts.
I'm close to pulling the trigger on an N2...

I am assuming you already own an ATV4k and the new Shield? If so I will eagerly await your findings

I own and ODROID N2, Apple TV 4K, and the new 2019 Shield TV Pro. I’d say the ODROID and Apple TV are pretty similar in upscaling quality, maybe a slight edge to the Apple TV, but I prefer the ODROID overall between the two because of its audio passthrough support and better frame rate support. The AI upscaler in the new shield, I would say is the overall best though. Especially if you have decently high quality content to begin with. Text is extremely sharp, and it does a great job overall.

Wow.. cheers, mate.. so the new shield pips them all? I didn’t think that would be the case but that’s awesome.

AI upscaling is limited to 30fps or lessor video content on the 2019 Shield. It also has problems at the moment with auto colorspace switching SDR <<—->> HDR, which seems to be an ever ongoing problem with Shield Firmware.

CoreELEC Kodi on the N2 can do reliable auto resolution switching, letting a high quality modern 4K TV handle all the non 4K picture upscaling.
The G51 GPU in the N2 has great Anti aliasing (removing Jaggies from pictures/video)

I own both the Odroid N2 and the new Shield.    Initial impressions are that the N2 at native resolution to my 77" LG C9 is better than the 2019 Shield upscaling everything to 4k.

I still need to do more testing with the AI Upscaling though.  Most of my testing was with live TV so 60fps output stuff.

Edit: AI Upscaling works well.

Correct, the N2 is definitely more versatile. With regard to the color space switching issue though, NVIDIA has already acknowledged it, and said a fix is coming in the next update. I’d say I prefer the AI upscaling on the Shield more than the upscaling on my LG C9 too.

Device upscaling/PQ survey

N2 - 2
Shield 2019 - 1
Apple TV4k - ?
Fire TV Cube 2019 - ?

I think we should create a separate thread on this and let users post their findings

RE: NVIDIA Shield TV Pro (2019 new model) - wrxtasy - 2019-10-30

AI upscaling cannot be used with Interlaced content either - eg Live or recorded, full motion, deinterlaced broadcast TV.

So there are limitations which upscaling on other platforms do not have.

RE: NVIDIA Shield TV Pro (2019 new model) - TSM2019 - 2019-10-30

Anybody know if Kodi can output Dolby Vision content from .iso with this new shield TV ?

Ah - yes - MrMC (a Kodi fork) is the Apple TV nearest bet. I thought the OP was writing about the Shield TV 2019.

Yep, what Hitcher said Smile

Personally I find MrMC sub-optimal, I’m not a big add on user but do like to try, test and use various pvr addons, MrMC is very limited on this. I’m also not a fan of the skins used and it seems to be less user friendly (Kodi is our only live tv viewing solution and, as I work away a lot, it needs to be very wife and kid friendly).

Isn't it Rec 2020 / Rec 709 gamut switching that is the issue? I think the HDR/SDR EOTF switching is fine. (Aren't there also issues with SDR Rec 2020 output?)

RE: NVIDIA Shield TV Pro (2019 new model) - Ogreen - 2019-10-30

Does KODI will be able to play .mp4 single layer DV files ?

At the moment they are output as HDR10 on my setup.
