anime series not being recognized (sort of) - Xylem Flow - 2021-01-10

Hi. I hope this is the right place to post this.

I have a bunch of anime series and Kodi recognizes almost all of them. Except for these two:
  • Asagao to Kase-san
  • Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-
I have the anime file structure like so: D:\Videos\Anime\<series name>\

I set this up in Kodi by going to the Videos area, Files, +Add Videos. All of the anime series are marked as TV Shows and they're pulling data from The Movie Database.

Like I said, all is well except for the two aforementioned anime. They're both in TMDB:
The first thing I tried was to use a bunch of variations of the series names from MyAnimeList, because it worked for a lot of other series when they weren't being recognized. But that didn't work for these two:
It's very weird, though. Kodi can find them when I Scan to Library (where it gives all the details), but they're not recognized in the list (no information available/white folder).

Is there a reason for this?

I hope that makes sense. It's hard to describe without screenshots.

Thanks.

Sorry, I forget this stuff:

1. Kodi v18.9
2. Windows 10 Home 64, fully updated
3. CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900x 12-core processor (AMD64)
4. Memory: 32GB

@Xylem Flow

I'll move you to the correct forum.

Kase-san and Morning Glories (2018) as it is shown on TMDB is a Movie so it won't scrape into tv shows.

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (2016) also does not scrape for me, and I put it down to all the punctuation. Easy to overcome. I used one of the alternate names (highlighted in the image) for the show and it scraped ok.

Ok, thanks. I did have Kase-san indicated as a movie, but it was in the anime folder, which is marked as TV Shows. It worked as soon as I moved it.

As for Re:Zero, you are my hero for the day!

Hi again,

So it doesn't work again. I have no idea why. I tried to fix it, but clearly I'm doing something terribly wrong or missing something painfully obvious.

Here's how I now have the file structure:

D:\Videos\Anime\Re Life In A Different World From Zero\
D:\Videos\Anime\Re Life In A Different World From Zero\Re Zero Life In A Different World From Zero 1st Season\
D:\Videos\Anime\Re Life In A Different World From Zero\Re Zero Life In A Different World From Zero 2nd Season\

In Kodi, that gives me the folder icon and "Re Life In A Different World From Zero" and no information.

I then Scan to Library and I get the info page for "Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (2016)" which we know doesn't work.

When I click Refresh, I get a smaller window that asks to select a TV show. My two options are : "Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (2016)" and "Re[bunch o' sqaures] (2016)". I know neither of those work (I tried them both), so I click Manual, which brings up the "Enter the TV show name" window, wherein I type what you gave me: "Re: Life in a Different World From Zero". That brings up the window to choose the same two options as before. And then leads back to the beginning with the folder icon and no information.

Here's a weird thing. The info page that comes up for this show says that there's only 1 season (there are 2) and only 6 episodes in season 1, but actually there are 25. In fact, I'm pretty sure there are no episodes, ONAs, adaptions, or anything else with only 6 episodes. At least that's what MyAnimeList says.

I am feeling especially dumb.

In Interface Settings, change to another font. Arial usually displays most characters.

I need a Debug Log that captures what you describe above.

Okay, I think I got this right. I hope anyway.

I started Kodi then did all that stuff and then shut it down, and after some searching found kodi.log.

I also changed the font and the bunch o' squares turned into some Asian text I don't recognize.

Looks like you gave me the wrong log or you have edited it to a point that it is useless. Also debug mode is not enabled.

Doh! Sorry. I'm not really sure what I'm doing. I didn't edit that, tho.

Yep, that's it.

You have your episodes incorrectly named. You have...
Re Life in a Different World From Zero - S01 01.mkv
But that is not a recognized numbering format.

It should be....
Re Life in a Different World From Zero - S01E01.mkv
Which Kodi will recognize.

First delete the library entry from the library, rename your episodes and try again. Either of those two search results should work. They are both the same show according to your log.

Wow, I had no idea there was a naming convention. I went through all the series and fixed each file (I have a nifty batch renamer), removed the anime folder, and added it back again. This time it took much longer to scan and it recognized all the episodes (I didn't know it could do that). That's pretty keen.

The Re Life series still isn't recognized at the root, but all of the episodes are. I'm okay with that, though. I have a butt-ton of anime series and Kodi is good with all of them except this one. It's not going to kill me to leave it that way, and it's not like I don't already know what the series is about.

But thank you very much for the help!

I have a question, though. Before I changed all the episode names, each series in the Kodi list had a check mark to the left of it. Now only a few do - the rest are little squares. All the info is there so it's not a problem, I was just curious why that is.

Thanks again.

The tick means that all episodes of the show are marked as Watched. The square means some or all episodes are Unwatched. You can mark and unmark the status using the Context Menu. You can also Filter displays for All, Watched and Unwatched from the Left Sideblade menu... https://kodi.wiki/view/Basic_controls#Sideblade_Menu

You mean that there is no info for the TV Show but there is info for each episode? Its hard to imagine why this has happened. Maybe you can post a screenshot. Button 14 or 19 to upload images

Right, no series, but the episodes show up.

Here's the bit where there's no info for the series.
Image

Inside that, I get this, which is odd because there are no 1x01 or 1x02 files in that folder (see below).

And this is the episode bit of Kodi.

Hope that helps.

RE: anime series not being recognized (sort of) - Karellen - 2021-01-14

That is weird. I can't think of a reason where episodes would scrape but not the TV Show. It scrapes ok for me here.

Highlight the show, press i on your keyboard and scroll the bottom row of buttons and select Refresh. No need to refresh episodes if they are all ok and answer Yes to ignore and Refresh from internet.

Does that fix it?

Also you should rename your internet shortcuts as they are being scraped as episodes. Don't use the same naming as episodes. Part x is the problem.
