I installed the development build for Matrx (https://mirrors.kodi.tv/nightlies/android/arm64-v8a/Matrix/) and it works fine.
Hope to have official release with this fix soon. But so far, for two days, I have no issue with the development build( kodi-20210411-0d1f616c-Matrix-arm64-v8a.apk ).

This should be part of 19.1, just released: https://kodi.tv/article/kodi-matrix-191-release

SMB is broken in v19. VLC has managed to get this working, hopefully Kodi can do the same.
It's not broken, it just takes a different setup
I have got it working on 3 boxes now, almost the very same as before, just different.

Check my previous posts.

Where in these 17 pages are your 'previous posts'? Would be helpful if you actually linked to them - cheers

There's a sticky at the top of the forum -

Configuring & Adding SMB/Samba Network shares

The prompt to select the SMB share is not what you want. You need to go to add network location and then select SMB for the protocol. This way works.

I put my money where my mouth is and donated $15 - I am super pleased that Kodi has a functioning fast forward / fast rewind button. I've been looking forward this feature for a dedicated Android / Google TV app for the newest Chromecast and I finally found it in Kodi.

Thank you!

Can you tell me if you are using the username & password to your server or your desktop?

This update didn't work for the Minix box running Kodi 19.1 Matrix. I am still getting error 2 messages and connection time outs to SMB.

What you have described is the procees I used in Kodi V18 to access the NAS unit. Affter the upgrade it broke.

I tried to downgrade to Kodi V18 but Android would not allow me to install it.

I finally uninstalled V19, sideloaded V18 and I now have access to my NAS and all the other SMB compliant devices.

In V18, I select "Add Source" in the file manager, I select "Windows network (SMB)". When selected, you see "WORKGROUP". Select WORKGROUP and I see all the SMB compliant devices on my network. Three on the devices are Windows clients and the other two are NAS devices.

When I try the same process in V19 and select "Windows network (SMB)", V19 does not find "WORKGROUP" and therefore I can't go any further.

On that basis, either the upgrade process screwed up something OR SMB is broken in V19.

I tried sideloading version 18.9. But no joy. Cn you tell me which version you did? Thanks.

If and when you use NAS make sure you create SMB shares with "kodi" user write permissions. In Kodi go to File Manager-->Add Sources-->Zeroconf Browser, select smb shares. Hope this help. I would and I do use NFS shares not SMB from the same NAS server.
Edit: Before you can use "Zeroconf Browser" option you will have to add Network Location from the same Add Source screen. When you select "Add Network Location" the new window pop-up. Enter server name (IP Address), user name "kodi" or whatever you specified in NAS for SMB share user and the password. The same procedure is to add NFS shares server (no user name and password needed). When this is done, go back to "Zeroconf Browser".

Two things...

- You'll need to whitelist your local network
- We have a VPN policy (wiki) on our forum

@arnoldswan Please learn how to use a quote correctly. You don't need to create two separate posts every time you do a reaction.

For what it's worth, I've tried every solution mentioned in this thread and smb shares still seem permanently broken for me. Streaming on Shield Pro 2019 from a Windows 10 PC. Flawless performance before upgrading to Kodi 19.1. Plex works fine, but I don't want to use Plex. The only thing I refuse to try is switching back to Kodi 18 cuz c'mon.

I'm not sure why this is happening, having SMB should be standards and I don't know why it is getting more complicated each time.

This is the step I took and got it to working.
  • Go to setting > service
  • Enable Expert mode
  • Set min requirement to SMBv1 (you need to restart and come back)
  • Set max requirement to SMBv1 (you need to restart and come back)
At this stage you will be able to connect SMB now but got stuck in user/pass. This doesn't work with non-user/pass folder.
If you want to access the folder then do the step below:
  • After the above setting, Now Legacy mode will be available turn it ON (you need to restart and come back)
  • DONE!
Now if you have the previous folder configuration, then this should fix it for you immediately.
But if you are new user, then you need to re add the directory again (smb://YOUR server IP) and then go in and add each shared folder one by one.

Also on the step above I did setup the workgroup to be the same one as my server and also setup WINS server to the same IP address as my router/gateway.

That's it, hope this help.
Hope this help.
Having the exact same issue in 19.1 on android 9. Kidi 18.9 is running fine va Windows 10 server.
The only way around it that I could find is the above, BUT there was one more setting I needed to do (on the Windows server side):
I had an admin w/o any password set (in Windows nor Kodi) , and disconnections still were seen after 20-30 minutes.

I have to define a new standard user WITH password in Windows and Kodi network locations, which ave resolve the issue for me.

I have a feeling that Kodi 19 has SMB related issues when not using a password, in addition to the strange SMBv1 requirement Sad

FYI!

RE: Upgraded to Matrix - SMB Broken? - Koitsu - 2021-07-05

what i did on 19.1, after kodi insisted on recieving a password that didn't exist, was enter a fake username and password.

username = z, password = z.

literally just the letter z. i didn't change anything on my pc, and changing the smb mix/max range didn't work for me anyway, so i put that back to the default before doing it. shabby coding.

I don't remember if the default (None, 3)  working for me Sad Why don't you open a new issue on their Github with your findings?
Regardless, Leaving Windows file system open to "anyone", is not advisable, and it is more secure to limit access to users you defined.
