2022 Amazon fire TV cube - Suj999 - 2022-10-06

Seems to have very interesting set up

Anyone tried Kodi in it yet?
I might order it tomorrow and give it a go over the weekend.

The specs seems rather good. If it would support lossless audio, it works be awesome. Here is me wishing.

RE: 2022 Amazon fire TV cube - jarosujo - 2022-10-06

100 MBit LAN only, 2GB RAM only...
And the worst one - 4K 60Hz only, so most likely no HDMI 2.1

RE: 2022 Amazon fire TV cube - Suj999 - 2022-10-06

2GB RAM is disappointing.

But glad it's getting Dolby TrueHD support, though no news about any DTS codecs.

DTS, DTS HD MA and Dolby True HD passthrough support and improved upscaling...that is interesting. Finally proper competition for Shield ? https://www.aftvnews.com/fire-tv-cube-gains-improved-upscaling-as-well-as-dts-dts-hd-and-dolby-true-hd-audio-passthrough-in-latest-software-update/

RE: 2022 Amazon fire TV cube - Billy - 2022-12-15

Has anyone tested whether Kodi can now pass through the new formats?

RE: 2022 Amazon fire TV cube - User 476552 - 2023-01-01

I own one of these, preordered it in fact so I've had it since release day.

I can say it's not REALLY better than the last one which I had since it's release.

Here's some highlights on what you can expect.

The 10/100 NIC can be problematic for 4K on Kodi, I noticed several times that other apps would downgrade to 1080p due to low bandwidth detection which is very annoying.
I tried a USB 10/100/1000 NIC (the one I used for the last version) and it still configures at 100Mbps so I'm on Wifi-6 which does actually work, mostly.

When using Wifi-6 the network will crash (or get killed to save memory?) in low system memory situations which will then cause further issues because apps detect and freak out without a network connection.

2GB Ram is a let down.

Kodi Nexus RC2 is a bit memory hungry on it, currently playing a 4K video on Kodi and here's the TOP output.

20007 u0_a228      10 -10 1.6G 479M 232M S 56.0  24.2 113:37.33 org.xbmc.kodi

free -m shows
                total        used        free      shared     buffers
Mem:             1978        1889          88          18           6
-/+ buffers/cache:           1882          95
Swap:             499         242         257

So I'm very close to the edge for memory and anything extra could trigger it crashing. I've resolved to custom compile Kodi just so maybe I can reduce the usage somewhere.

Widevine L1 has been working flawlessly for 4K HDR10.

4K HDR10 HEVC Playback via Hardware Acceleration is just perfect imo, only thing it seems to have a slight issue with is VC1 (minor stuttering/slowdowns) which everything seems to.

I can't say much about audio/audio passthrough as I haven't really done anything special with it, it plays audio on my soundbar is all I can say.

The USB port is a bonus but I haven't really tested it with any major throughput, it runs a wireless receiver for a controller and that's all.
You could possibly connect an external hard drive but I doubt it will mount, I know for a fact it will not mount Linux EXT, doubt NTFS but didn't try.

HDMI Input with CEC is a nice idea at first but there's issues with the CEC, it will control up to a point but if you press Home then go back to HDMI it won't control at all.
I ran a 4K Sony BluRay player to it and the limited buttons on the Fire remote makes you miss Menu, Popup and Stop buttons for BluRay control.
Video playback over HDMI was acceptable, nothing much to note but I prefer Kodi playback for it's integration.

Overall it's been a bit disappointing but functional, I couldn't recommend it over Gen 2 at all and the network thing makes me want the Gen 2 back.

Compared to other Android boxes I would prefer it to anything Nvidia, cheaper boxes just don't compare in the specs department.

It feels like a rushed device, not very polished but you could do worse in the same price point.

If anyone wants to know something specific I'd be more than happy to try and assist.

TrueHD & ATMOS, yes. DTS/MA/X, no. DTS HRA/MA/X is now working w/the latest firmware!

RE: 2022 Amazon fire TV cube - Roby77 - 2023-01-02

Thank for your review

No gigabit and 2 gb of ram it's a no go

Thats very disappointing.

The Fire TV (sticks) are very good devices but without the full audio passthrough support they have no value for users with high-quality sound systems.
The "old" Shields are still the first choice.

RE: 2022 Amazon fire TV cube - izprtxqkft - 2023-01-23

i just set this up with 7.1 passthrough, works good
dts (DTS-HD MA), 48000 Hz, 7.1, s32p (24 bit) (default)

UPDATE:

the audio is slowly shifting out of sync, 0.3 audio delay at the beginning, 0.9 by the end and still out of sync

RE: 2022 Amazon fire TV cube - hdmkv - 2023-02-04

All HD audio formats are now bitstreaming perfectly for me.
