Apple TV 4K 2022 - KoopaTroopa - 2022-10-19

Hi guys,

I just saw today Apple announced the new 2022 version of Apple TV 4k.

Two models, both with A15 Bionic.

64 GB with Wifi-only, no ethernet (AU$219 US$129)

128 GB with Wifi and Gigabit Ethernet and Thread (Matter) support (AU$249 US$149)

--

Not sure what else is updated from last year's 4K model but this seems pretty good upgrade along with the lower prices

Anything you guys can see in this new model that will be either good or bad for Kodi going forward?  I've been in the market for a new Apple TV and was hearing the rumours of a new model this year, and the day has arrived...

The only problem with the previous Apple TV in my opinion was that it did not have audio passthrough. Looks like this new Apple TV with the new chip will be better in all aspects but it still seems to be missing audio passthrough.

I very much doubt the lack of HD audio passthrough is a hardware issue - it's far more likely to be an OS/Firemware support issue.  There is no 'official' source of HD Audio passthrough AFAIK - only UHD and BD rips carry HD Audio and those rips are not deemed legal in many territories as they involve bypassing DRM - so no reason for Apple to support it.

If a streaming service introduced HD Audio - then Apple would have a reason to support it.  (See also Amazon's Fire TV devices)

I never said its a hardware issue just that apple tv does not support audio passthrough

I would wish that there is a official ATV App in the store, with all Addons preinstalled, which are considered legal (like language packs, scrapers and so on). Would live perfectly without beeing able to install more Addons, but having a prperly supported version of Kodi.

And since the last ATV already had an awesome remote with finally a d-pad it is perfectly usable. And the ATV is a very powerful device. Was able to do 2x yadif on 1080i h264 in pure software.

Sadly seems like that will not be the case.

Vlaves

Ah - I thought your reference 'with the new chip' was a suggestion that the new hardware would support more than the previous hardware.

So they mark it as hdmi 2.1, but yet only 4K/60 Hz..

Anyone with ATV 4K 2022 and Kodi ?
Please share your experience :-)
Thanx

As ever HDMI specs increment with a bouquet of standards - many of them optional.  AIUI HDMI 2.1 also introduced a bunch of other stuff like Variable Refresh Rate, Auto Low Latency Mode, Quick Media Switching (which reduces the interruption on frame rate/resolution changes etc.)

Just as TVs with HDMI 1.4-bandwidth inputs were able to claim HDMI 2.0 support because they supported 2160p50/60 using 4:2:0 (and no other format for 2160p50/60), you don't have to support every bit of the HDMI 2.1 to claim HDMI 2.1 compatibility...

(I wonder if Apple are aiming for 1080p120 or 2160p120 gaming support at some point?)

I've got an ATV 4K 2021 (2nd gen) and ATV 4K 2017 (1st gen) and don't really see a compelling reason to upgrade at the moment. I run MrMC rather than Kodi on both of them.

How is MrMc handling HDR and Dolby Atmos ?

I don't have any Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos to test with, but the Dolby True HD with Atmos is output as PCM multichannel (so lossless output of the 5.1/7.1 elements but no Atmos extensions)

I haven't tested HDR in any great depth on the Apple TV 4K - but I'm pretty sure HDR10 content is output as PQ10/ST.2084 - but I don't know if the HDR10 static metadata is also output correctly, so can't say if it's HDR10 rather than PQ10. (At one point there was an issue with tvOS running with fixed static MaxCLL and MaxFALL values)

Is DV or HDR10+ supported via MrMC?

RE: Apple TV 4K 2022 - Glorious1 - 2022-11-16

Can I just ask a question about installing regular Kodi on Apple TV 4k?  People who do it are either reinstalling every 7 days or getting a paid $99 developer account?  That is my understanding from the installation wiki - am I right?
