Yes with the default background or other more minimal backgrounds with not to much contrast the readability is pretty good. However when using custom backgrounds with more contrast like fanart images it isn't good enough to my liking. Especially in lists the subtle shade behind the text just isn't enough to keep things readable enough in some cases.
That's also the reason that fanart will be shifted more to the dedicated fanart viewtype while the emphasis in other viewtypes will really be about the readability. Fanart will be possible in those views, but more subtle. Much more. As a side effect the fanart viewtype will make the fanart actually come out better. All in all the new direction will give focus a more uniform look.

I do like the simplicity of this skin and the fact it's so easy to read the text,
My only gripe is the fact it's not optimized for 4:3 display's which causes some text to overlap.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with next and hope it does not lose it's simplicity and end up looking like a clone of aeonWink

I finaly have internet again and have updated to Focus Alpha6. I guess because it's a HD skin now the fonts are bigger, which looks absolutely great for my 82cm widescreen PAL CRT TV. The only downsides are that the top buttons in the home screen are overlapping and that text in some screens is overlapping. If you'd ask me the skin should only have to be slightly modified for use on a 16:0 PAL TV. Great job Jeroen!

errors in xbmc.log - azido - 2008-12-06

hey there,

first of all: is it possible i saw your name in other skinning projects too? sounds real familiar to me.

now:

i've installed latest focus and run a fresh install of the latest svn from yesterday on windows xp. when starting up xbmc, i cannot see any mouse pointer onscreen (though mouse is functional) and some additional screen flickering comes up as soon as there is another window opened on my desktop. when switching to fullscreen there is no more flickering.

here's some log info from xbmc:

plot info in movie fanart mode? - azido - 2008-12-06

me again,

shouldn't there

Image

be the movie plot in the lower part of the screen? i can see it if i use the context menu and select film information, but it's not displayed in fanart view like it does when browsing tv-show episodes in fanart view..

Image

and yes, wherever i can select at skin specific settings, "No Plot Info in Fanart View" is deselected.

finally, speaking of overlaying text, here are some other screens i captured for you:

1. tv-shows (fanart view) with more than 1 season
Image

2. tv-show information screen with much info for the plot (yes, scrollbars enabled)
Image

3. music database - title information screen
Image
(seems the font is too big to fit the buttons)

all screens made on 1280x720 resolution for xbmc.. hope this helps you removing the issues, since this is a really nice skin.

cheers
azido

Not that I know of, Focus is my first and only skin so far Smile If it's in non-xbmc skins, my name is pretty common in the Netherlands so there's bound to be some other skinner with the same name Smile

Thanks for your great feedback! I was aware of some of the issues, but not all so thanks.
You cannot see the mouse pointer as I forgot to include an xml file which references the mouse pointer texture. It's fixed in my version, I'll see if I can upload a quick fix for it later.
The long list of warnings in the log are not a big deal, some code cleaning will take care of that. They are references to code that has been removed.

Yes, plot info should appear in the lower part of the fanart view. There is an error in the code that shows/hides the plot info. This is also corrected in my version. The same goes for the issue in the seasons screen.

I wasn't aware of issue 2 and 3, those will be adressed.

Thanks again for your feedback,

Jeroen

okay then.. no wonder, if it's that common. i think i saw some winamp and windowblinds skins by a guy called jeroen and wondered if that's you.

you are more than welcome. thank you for sharing that beautiful skin!

ah, there we go.. nice. i just followed some of your postings and thought you won't really add mouse support to it. nice you do.

i see.. that makes sense, since i didn't get the feeling it harms the skin in any way.

glad i was able to show you something new Smile

looking forward for your fixes..

Thanks for the great skin! This is now my default skin and I can't wait for more updates. Smile

- Stunts38 - 2008-12-14

Hi jeroen

This skin is great, any news on an update? No pressure just curious Rolleyes

Thanks

- Jeroen - 2008-12-15

Not much news at the moment I'm afraid. And that will probably stay that way for a while.
A lot of work is being done on Focus, but I'm currently working on finding a new direction for the skin. The main thing is there, but now it's a matter of filling in the blanks. And with skin development it's mostly trying out 10 things first and trashing them before finding the 1 thing that works (at least that's how it is in my experience) In other words, very time consuming Blush

i see.
mind telling me how to fix the missing plot display in movie fanart view?

the pointer thing is already fixed i copied over another pointer.xml which did the job.

I would also like the missing plot fix.

Another small bug I found; every time I browse videos or music it always starts in file mode. Is there a way to fix this?

Other then that I'm really happy with this skin. Big Grin

I´ll look into providing a fix for the missing plot info.

The second one is not a bug. Hitting the main menu buttons on the homescreen will always take you into filemode, pressing down on the main menu buttons will provide access to library related functions. This is by design.

Thanks Smile

- quake101 - 2008-12-16

Gotcha, I really like the menus (more options by pressing down) but, is there a way I can make library mode default? If not, is it possible to add it to the skin options? Smile
