oy but still no dice, i get the white box with the quit button still.

i think i can make out the word drivers in the text...

the first sentence I cant make out... the 2nd sentence says please install an appropriate graphics driver (i think)

thats odd. when i login from the terminal it provides me a prompt where i can type in commands.

not sure what you are seeing. if its not too much trouble can you attach a picture from a digital camera ?

so anytime you try to login via ctrl-alt-f2 thru ctrl-alt-f6 it gives that error ?; are you able to hit ctrl-alt-bksp to kill x.

sorry for the flip.
This is a closeup of the box that pops up if I let the revo run its course during start up. this comes after the xbmc logo.
Now I can get out of it by pressing ctrl alt f2/f6 which will give me the standard xbmc login
"ubuntu 9.10 XBMCLive tty2
XBMCLive login:" (this is what is on my screen after pressing said commands above)

I can then login with my username and password but am at a loss as to what to do now.

assuming you got an internet connection:
Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install xbmc

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?p=679210#post679210

i ran : sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install xbmc

And nothing changed, still get the same screen as shown above.

although I don't understand this part of the directions:
so i re-flashed my usb using dd to xbmc-live-9 (good thing i made a backup).
i booted up my acer revo using xbmc-live-9.
i ssh'd into it from another pc (xbmc/xbmc for login/pass).

But I was able to log in and run the command you stated, but nothing changed, still no dice.

^ that sux... did it spit out any error ?

mine would scroll thru hundreds of lines of text basically saying it is downloading and installing sources and dependancies...
(it actually should tell you how much space it needs to install and you would have to type 'y' to continue).

was the install successful ?

...
are you able to get a working version of xbmc-9-live-usb ?

The install was successful, typed y at one point. I can't get a working version of 9

^ i'm out of ideas... the only thing i can think of is that this command tried to update something nonessential to xbmc:
sudo apt-get upgrade (like trying to upgrade the display driver).

at this point i would try to create a live usb of xbmc-10 (which wouldnt boot up for me so i used my backup of xbmc-9 and used apt-get to upgrade to version 10).

good luck,

Bought an external DVD drive, can i just download the latest version and mount it on a DVD and just load it from there? I'll just set up everything again

- schneidz - 2011-01-08

^ yeah, the live-dvd should work the same as a live-usb (you would have to ensure that you burn the image as an iso in your dvd writing software).

maybe by cutting out the unetbootin step to create a bootable usb drive, you will be more successful in creating a bootable dvd.

How I Upgraded from xbmc 9 to 10:

I started out with this Nerd -

Quote:Boot revo, hit ESC and select XBMC - SAFE MODE
login
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo reboot
sudo apt-get install xbmc
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo reboot

but then I got this Shocked -

Image

I managed to finish the install by doing this Big Grin-

Quote:sudo apt-get remove xbmc-live
sudo nvidia-installer --update -a -s -f
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc-live
sudo reboot

(found here ->http://boshdirect.com/blogs/tech/fix-revo-nvidia-driver-error.html)

Hope this helps other noobies like me !

-I take no credit for anything, I just copy paste like a monkey but it worked-

^ it seems like upgrading debian is fubar-ing the graphics driver.

so my method in post #813 basically updates xbmc without upgrading debian.

not on livecd but vdpau wasn't working on my install until i added the x-swat ppa.
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates
newer drivers than the default ubuntu repos.

my revo is running fine apart from on 1080p files when it buffers a lot, anyone help as to what i need to do?

- Uuaww - 2011-01-12

Sucess, that worked like a charm. Now a new prob, xbmc is running but won't recognize any of my external hd

- Uuaww - 2011-01-13

Did so
E trouble shooting, and checked the boot menu and my Revo does recognize the USB drive there. But not while in xbmc. I tried uninstalling live and re installing it from the command line but no luck
