Hickups/stuttering on ION. Caused by caching? - WWWilco - 2009-12-07

There are some small hickups on my ION mediacenter. I adjusted xorg.conf to include 1080@24, 50 and 60 fps modes on my Sony Bravia, tried noflip and still there are some random moments at which the video stutters. I'm using xbmc beta 1 and an nvidia ION with 512 MB shared, connected through HDMI.

CPU usage is always low, even during stuttering, the xbmc log shows nothing before, during or after the stuttering.

Already tried to shutdown HAL, udev, etc. but there is still some stuttering. For example, when it stutters at 10 secs in the video, the next time it might not stutter there but at 5 or 15 secs or so which leads me to believe it's some caching issue?

hi,
sorry for my english
same problem
i have a Sony Bravia z4500 and mb zotac ionitx-a
i have edited the xorg.conf but mkv file or hd content are unwatchable
i have tested xbmc live and xbmc over ubuntu but is the same.
in ubuntu, if visual effect of gnome are enable, i have less stutter then visual effect are disable Huh
i have oveclocked the CPU, reserved more videoram, disable or enable emory feature in bios setting, but not change
VDPAu work great ... with killa sample the cpu usage are under 10% ... with other mkv file under 5% ... 0 frame drop....but some stutter

have you any idea ??
thanks

Well HD content is very watchable for me because I only have a little bit of stuttering. It's just annoying

Have you tried the sync playback to display feature: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?p=336538

I may be seeing the same thing with my Ion setup with beta 1, nvidia-glx-190, and a minimal Ubuntu install. It's not unwatchably bad, but there is noticeable stuttering here and there both with and without frame drops. CPU usage is also very low.

Here is the xorg.conf I'm using, mostly copied from this forum.

With the "NoFlip" option enabled, the stuttering is much worse for me and produces tearing.

- AlphaDog - 2009-12-08

The problem is with the powermizer. I think it wont go to full throttle when using VDPAU. In the 195 beta drivers, there is an option to prefer max performance. No stuttering since... The driver is beta, so I had some weird crashes and stuff. Simple reinstall will fix it most of the time.

- WWWilco - 2009-12-09

No luck with new beta drivers and disabling powermizer either.

On my desktop compuer, xbmc can play the videos fine using VDPAU. But that is a C2D 3.0 Ghz with an NVIDIA 9600GT.

In the same scene I got a lot of dropped frames on the ION box. So it seems like the ION is just too buggy to play these files. I mean, 10% CPU and dropped frames, there is clearly something wrong here.

- freddy - 2009-12-09

I think the problem doesn't come from the ION platform as I can play 1080p smoothly on my ION with smplayer + VDPAU. For the same reason, we can also assume that the judder issue doesn't come from the NVIDIA driver (190.42 in my case).
I tried many combinations of XBMC parameters but nothing works. I have nearly the same xorg.conf as diglett and I observe also the tearing problem with "NoFlip" "True" option. Here are my observations:
As soon as I activate the "sync to vblank" in XBMC I have judder (with or without adjust frame rate).
Without "sync to vblank" it is smooth but with tearing.
When I try to activate "adjust to frame" and "sync to playback" XBMC hangs (9.11 beta 1).
With "adjust to frame rate" on, when XBMC switches my TV(samsung le40A676) in 24Hz it's worse Huh
A 720p movie without VDPAU play smooth.
Hope this issue will be solved soon because using smplayer after XBMC + skin + scrapper No

i think my problem is mine Sony Bravia z4500 tv...
i have tried my xbmc mediacenter with another tv ( samsung 46 656a)
without editing the xorg.conf file, mkv file are smooth and less stutter are present Sad

- freddy - 2009-12-11

Cataratta, could you please post your xorg.conf to see if there is something I missed in mine.

Althekiller, as soon as I have time I will upgrade to beta 2 and post log files (if I still have problem)
Ciao

Hey guys,

I have the exact same problem. Some very occasionally stuttering for ~1sec, like 2-4 times during a movie. I use the Beta1 on a Asrock ION 330 with minimal Ubuntu installed (no XBMCLive).
I'm under the impression that I didn't have those problems under any version before the Beta1. At least I didn't notice anything.
I didn't try anything special up to now and thought it might be a minor bug in the recent version. I will definitely give the new Beta a go as soon as I have more time on my hands.
I'm kinda 'glad' that it's not only on my end, though Smile

I'm having a similar problem, however I don't have an ION. I'm wondering if it is a Karmic problem? Is everyone posting to this thread running Karmic?? (or XBMC Live Beta 1 or 2 as those are also Karmic based I believe)

- WWWilco - 2009-12-11

Log:http://pastebin.com/md074eaa

BTW I'm using arch linux, not Karmic. This test is with NVIDIA beta drivers; same problems occur with the stable drivers.

And thanks for all the people helping me!
