Superorb Wrote:You might want to price out an unRAID build. It's not proprietary like a Drobo, and it will likely be cheaper than a Drobo too.

FlexRAID is an option too ... I think anything is cheaper than Drobo.

I'm currently running a home built server - Supermicro motherboard, i3 cpu, 8GB RAM + supermicro sata cards, 11x2TB+1x3TB disks. Windows 2008 R2+Flexraid (Parity is stored on a separate HP NAS box). Feeds 4 XBMC Live boxes (lounge, bedroom, mancave and kitchen(!)). I use Wiimotes as controllers, MySQL database running on the server.

You could probably build out that whole server including storage for what you'd pay for the drobo and a couple of 3tb drives .. would run fine on flexraid or unraid.

Guess it depends if price or convenience is your pain point ...

You can pickup some Adaptec OEM SAS Cards cheap, Couple them together with a couple SAS Expanders and you will be right as rain!

If speed is not an issue that can be done, but if you want speed... look for a higher end Adaptec or ARECA Card..

My first box does 566MB/s between arrays, the second box does closer to 1100MB/s

Storage seems a bit over the top, like this weeks build

haha do you have every bluray your not netflix are you?? that is the most amazing amount of storage i have seen fantastic lol all day long love it!

Superorb Wrote:^^ Wow, the hardware on all those machines is obscenely overkill. Seriously, NO HTPC needs four 128gb SSD's in RAID 0. Maybe he's got money coming out of everywhere and he's trying to blow it all on something. If that's the case I wouldn't mind a few of his spare parts Big Grin

Mum lives with me as she has a medical condition,
Our Power Bill is roughly 1500AUD a Month which is massive I know, but not so much here in Oz,

Currently I have 1464 1080P Movies and alot more in 720 (No Doubles), alot of TV Shows & even more documentaries...

The Old HTPC was insane (it was running windows!), but the old MSI Board gave out so i upgraded to something less.... power hungry ...

Quad Core AMD Phenom, 8GB Ram, NVidia GT210 and XBMC Live..
Parts were sold to fund the operation,

I am a Home Theater installer / Network Administrator... All Parts were purchased through friends and me working my ASS off to pay the credit cards off haha!

^^ I think we're all just jealous of your awesome hardware Wink

Hey, wanted to share my setup. Screen is a 50" Panasonic plasma, use a Mac Mini 2009 (Core2Duo with 9400M graphics) for the HTPC. Amp is a Naim Audio n-Vi with B&W M1s and a PV-1 sub. Small, discrete, wife-friendly yet sounds great.

Image

Back-end is a custom rack-mount server with 2x DroboPros holding 34Tb of disk. It runs MySQL for the database. There's a UPS in the rack, Cisco gigE switch and SA520 for the Internet connection.

Image

Next steps for the end of the year/early next: more storage; upgrade the HTPC to a new MacMini; and replace the n-Vi with an Emotiva box so I can bitstream lossless audio.

All of these make me so jealous! My ATV2, 1TB NAS and tiny TV seem nothing in comparison!

"Wife Friendly" I like that.
Very clean setup.

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know I rewrote my script to scrape and organize movie files. It will now also rename the files to how IMDb has it "MovieName (MovieYear)"

I made it public here:

Hey Mate,

Can you give me/us a little more detail (in brief) into the rack gear you are running? (eg: switch models, raid array (if running one), reasons of choice, ect).

cheers mate.

mine is alright now the most extensive setup but not the most basic either

pictures will follow once i recharge my htc desire will take pics

Media Server:

Intel Q8400 CPU
Asus P5P43TD Mobo
4 gb ddr3 1333mhz ram
Windows 7 x64 (networked through homegroup to htpcs)
4 port raid card (for future hard drive expansion)
1 x 120gb Toshiba 2.5" laptop hard drive (using as boot drive)
seasonic S2II 620watt PSU

these are part being added eventually to it

3 x Coolermaster 4 in 3 Module Hard drive cages (will hold 4 hard drive in each 3 5.25 drive bays)

between 8 or 12 x 2tb Western Digital Green Drives (current have 2 installed buying more as i can afford and as needed) these will be in a non-raid setup as i don't like raid and prefer to keep offline backups

I then have two htpc which are almost identical except for case and PSU and cpu

they are

Asrock 880gmh-le/usb3 motherboard
AMD Athlon x2 255 and 260 cpu
4gb kingston ddr3 1333mhz ram
1tb WD green drive and 60gb 2.5" laptop drive (all media kept on server)
Antec eco greem 420watt and Vantec silent psu

TCL 42" LCD TV and Vivid 32" tv

TP-Link TL-WR1043ND Wireless N Gigabit Router (to route all htpcs and desktop pc to server)

What's the make and model of that Cabinet? im looking for something similar

Hi bazwalt,

OK, so the router is a Cisco SA520. My Internet connection is 24Mbps and presents over a standard Ethernet port, not ADSL, so I needed a fast and secure router to connect my LAN to the Internet. The SA520 has a strong firewall plus IPS and AntiX capabilities, as well as an extra port that I use as a DMZ (allows me to securely VNC into my my home setup when I'm travelling). Cost around 300GBP.

The switch is a Cisco SG300-20. GigE ports, L2/L3 switching with VLANs, fully managed with a web interface, support CoS/QoS (so I can prioritise Skype traffic etc. when I'm using lots of bandwidth for HTTP or FTP downloading). And it plays nicely with the SA520. Cost around 200GBP.

The UPS is an APC Smart-UPS 750VA with USB connection to the server. It runs the whole setup for around 30 minutes in the event of a power failure and also ensures that no nasty power spikes etc. cause any damage. Cost around 300GBP delivered.

The server is a custom RACK-C2 from mini-itx.com with an Atom processor and an SSD - works very well as the MySQL server and file server for the content - as well as 4x gigE ports. One for the network connection and three for connection to the disk arrays over iSCSI (two used, one spare).

The disk arrays are DroboPros. I don't want to be drawn into a big discussion about Drobos vs. freeNAS or other 'proper' RAID 5 arrays but, for me, the reason why I went with the DroboPros is that I like the performance (80Mbps consistent over the iSCSI interface), ease of use (mix and match drives in terms of size and firmware, replace faulty drives without downtime, etc.) and low noise. I use 5,400rps drives in them as I don't find 7,200rpm drives give me much better performance; they're a mix of 3Tb and 2Tb WB green series drives.

The rack is a 15U one bought from a local dealer (Dafnia Electronics in Karama, Dubai) specialising in racks and other data centre equipment. They sell European sourced racks and ones like the one I have which was made in India, which was 1/3 the price of the EU ones! I'm very happy with it, it's solid, well-made, has a tempered glass door and cost around 200GBP all-in. I'll try and find the invoice so I can see the manufacturer name and post that.

Hope that helps.

cw.

Mine may not be as fancy as everyone elses on here, but it's mine and I like it.

I have some cable tidying to do and a couple more hard drives are arriving soon.

Image

Beer crate from my favourite brewery, converted with a Lian Li removable motherboard tray to it's current configuration.

mATX motherboard (it has onboard graphics, but they're ATi so effectively useless for my purposes), AMD X2 CPU, 65W, 8GB RAM, nVidia GT570 (silent HS) 1x500GB for Linux and apps, 3x2TB (5x2TB next week) in RAID5 (using mdadm), no optical drive, I rip stuff from discs using my big machine elsewhere and put them on here.

It also runs as a game server.
