RE: [RELEASE] Advanced Launcher - Applications Launcher Addon for XBMC - Scr3wdriv3r - 2014-11-01

Hi, I just registered here, recently bought a Pivos XS which originally had Android on it. After installing XBMC for Android on it I was not quite happy with it, and on www.pivosforums.com, I read about a Linux version created by Hydra (Gotham 13.2) (who in my eyes is half god for making this kind of builds for free).

I am very happy with this, but it took away the ability to run Android apps, so also games. Now me and some other XS users are wondering if gaming is currently an option, for example by using Advanced Launcher. Of what I understand, Advanced Launcher runs emulators, which on their turn run ROM's you want to play (please bear in mind I am a beginning XBMC user).

After exploring results that google brought me, I think that most of what I read involves a Windows machine and/or emulators?

Can anyone put me on the right track of (casual) gaming on Hydra's build of XBMC?

For the related post (a couple posts down, same username): http://www.pivosforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=4823&start=130
Here you can see I also came across a project named RetroPlayer, which I also not fully understand, but there is mentioning about a Linux version...

Thanks so much!

Now I can actually play (the sound is still missing but I guess that is due to WASAPI settings and exclusive mode). However, when I quit the game issue (3) above persists. Any idea how to resolve that?
If you :
  • Do not use XBMC Launcher
  • Use XBMC into windowed mode
  • Disable GUI sounds into XBMC
  • Activate the "Toggle XBMC into Windows" option in your launcher advanced settings.
Does it improve something?

Hi Angelscry,

Thanks for your continued support!

Took some time, but here what happened:
Disabling GUI sounds got me sound in CMR -> good
Scraping the XBMC launcher obviously helped with some of the focus issues (simply launching Kodi from autostart now) -> Not as nice to look at booting but also good
When I quit CMR now, I get Kodi back in fullscreen (appeared in some small window earlier) -> good
Only issue left: Kodi still runs in the wrong resolution of 1080i ("inherited" from Win/CMR) rather than 720p (the one Kodi was using before the game was started)

Not sure, might also be a Kodi Helix Alpha3 issue...

Just install game emulators on your linux system (you will found some here : http://www.linuxlinks.com/article/20081012160727880/VideoConsoles.html) and launch them using command line support from Advanced Launcher.

For booting under Windows : Put XBMC into start menu, use a black wallpeper, remove any icons from the desktop and autohide de taskbar. It will do the job.

Are you using XBMC into fullscreen windows mode and not into true fullscreen mode? Also, into into your CMR launcher advanced settings, have you try to force XBMC to toggle into window?

Cool. So logical. So easy. Cheers for that!

Unfortunately, yes, i.e. I already use the windowed fullscreen mode and I forced toggling XBMC to Windows in the advanced settings. I followed all of your instructions to the letter.

Probably what I really need is a new TV which supports at least Full HD and is also able to natively display regular PC resolutions over HDMI. Then, for Kodi it's default resolution is actually the same as the best resolution for the viewer and my games will not have to run in interlaced mode anymore... :-)

Yep, that nice, but the taskbar appears visible when booting, then it autohide. If there were a ways to hide taskbar at startup... I´ll try your idea cause desktop looks ugly in Media Center system. I´m using Modern UI start Screen with only XBMC tile active but will try...

Can I set a thumb and Fanart to Category??

I realize that I am lightyears behind in knowledge about these things, but what do you mean by "just install"? I looked at Nestopia for Linux, and am redirected to Arbee's Emporium, where under downloads they start about 'Fedora packages' which are binaries (clueless on what to do with this info). If I were to ignore this, it points out Linux 1.40 core source and Linux 1.40 release H overlay source to download. The main link is down, I can only download the overlay source, on Archlinux.org I can get two types of version 1.46.2.1 (x86_64 and i686). I am not sure on which to grab, and even less on what to do with it next.

Do I need to compile these files first before launching with Advanced Launcher? If yes, is this a good tutorial to follow?:

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/how-tos/how_compile_software_source_code

If not, do I just point Advanced Launcer to nestopia-1.46.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz (or i686 version)? Edit: tried the following:

- Start Advanced Launcher
- Add new launcher -> Files Launcer (e.g. game emulator)
- Selected nestopia-1.46.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz on my NAS
- Selected files path where I have some NES roms
- Left set files extensions as they were (nes|zip)
- Left application arguments as they were ("%rom%"|)
- Set title of launcher to Nestopia
- Selected platform Nintendo Entertainment System
- Set thumbnails path to same as where the roms are (only roms are in there though)
- Same for fanart

When I now select "Nestopia" it tells me to first add 'items' (not sure what items, but I guess roms?)

So I choose to add items, then manually add (scan brings no results). I know get a list of my roms, so I select Addams Family, the.nes and set a title for it. If I know select "The Addams Family", I get "File nestopia-1.46.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz not found". So guess this doesn't work.

I want to push through, but hope it is not out of my league...

Thanks.

As I don't know which linux distribution your are using, it will be complicated to tell you how you could install applications (like emulators) on your system with this distribution. Here you take the problem in the wrong way. Advanced Launcher is to start application. But to do that, applications must by first installed and functionnal on your system. If it is not the case (as for you) then you will have to ask to the application devellopers you want to use or to the distribution devellopers you are using how to do it.

Hi Angelscry,

Thanks for answering my query before. I have another. On the current viewtype I'm building I want to add a search button (which I have done) but I don't know what to put in my <onclick> parameter to make it trigger the search function for Advanced Launcher you can get in the menu. Can you possibly advise? Thanks.

RE: [RELEASE] Advanced Launcher - Applications Launcher Addon for XBMC - CaBrA - 2014-11-03

Why sometimes the list of launchers is empty? I have to restore from backup.

(2014-11-03, 01:53)CaBrA Wrote: Why sometimes the list of launchers is empty? I have to restore from backup.
Because, sometime, XBMC randomly wipes the content of the listitems from the system memory. If at this same moment Advanced Launcher is writtinng the content of the listitems into the launchers.xml file, then the launchers.xml file is not correctly saved. Then, the next time Advanced Launcher will need open the launchers.xml file, the launchers list will be corrupted or empty.

This XBMC bug has been reported here : http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/15105
