Funny that you mention this as i had that happen quite a few times... i was testing a raspberrypi at the time and just thought it was a hardware problem and the RPi failing on me..

No, the rar wasn't broken.
i solved the problem by reinstalling xbmc from another repo.
it seems that rar playback is disabled in the ubuntu/debian repo.

I applied the the fix and it is better however like it was mentioned before its about 10% of the new releases do not work. When I get one I'll PM you the details...
