X-Post to the CR Forms

It is with a heavy heart that I report that the Kodi (XBMC) plugin to view Crunchyroll has been hit with a DMCA take down.
Over the 4 years of it's existence it was used by (as of 2016) 5000 monthly active PAYING users.
A stress the Paying part because the version that was taken down, mostly unchanged since 2016, required a paid subscription.  While I feel the take down was in bad faith, if I was contacted I would have removed the plugin.

I HAVE DELETED THE REPO BEFORE MAKING THIS POST.

P.S. If we have to use the CR app or the VRV app, can you fix it so the login doesn't break once a month?

Thankx Bye
XBMC user since before that Music db hack.
Now with his 2nd DMCA Takedown

Oh well, thank you for all the effort on keeping this, real bummer it have to be deleted. Sad

That's my only real complaint, TBH. I stopped using my Plex app a while ago because the mobile app + Chromecast is so easy and streams in 1080p. Oh well.

Best of luck to you with your future endeavors!

This sucks. I would have used this addon if crounchyroll had any good animes in germany. But well one option less, I guess.

I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, just my observations and links to online websites.

In 2013, Snapchat took down a reverse-engineered API library claiming it was a DMCA circumvention device, spawning a HackerNews thread (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6083812 ).

The second-upvoted response (as well as the top) stated that (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6084365 )
Quote:As with file formats, the notion that network protocols & APIs should ever be granted any type of protection and that no-one other than the creators should be able to write software that conforms to these protocols is ridiculous.
Snapchat, in my view, have every right to restrict who uses their service and in what manner - via standard mechanisms like API keys and login credentials. But preventing third-party implementations of protocols or APIs is so 90s. Oracle had a bit of trouble with this recently.
Anyway https://github.com/tlack/snaphax is back online (although it hasn't been updated since 2013).

I suspect this takedown request is baseless. Crunchyroll claims your independently written code is a copyright violation because it uses reverse-engineered APIs? I doubt APIs (even internal) are copyrightable, unless Oracle v. Google is used as precedent. Reverse engineering could be a violation of ToS/etc (I'm unsure about the details), but that's not what they complained about.

Anyway I have a Gitlab repository (with the premium-only restriction easily removed, much like the still-alive https://github.com/YePpHa/crunchyroll-html5 ). If my repo gets taken down as well, I'll switch to the HTML5 adblock extension. If that's removed as well, I'll stop using Crunchyroll.

Should I share the link to the original and/or patched code?

It was recently judged that APIs usage is not fair use (in the Unites States at least)

Very lame that this happened. I hope the same doesn't happen to the Netflix addon.

I believe this takedown request is baseless, it does not use copyrighted code. Anyway if my mirror gets taken down, it gets taken down.

Nonetheless it seems you don't want this addon on the forums, so I don't really care if you delete it.

@jimbo1qaz

We have discussed your add-on.

In light of the recent action from Crunchyroll, we do not believe it would be a good idea to allow you to host the add-on here... even though we do agree with the unfairness of the takedown.

Keep your account active, as there is always the possibility of change in the future.

I've reached out to some folks I personally know over at Crunchyroll to get some clarification and was told this:
Quote:I imagine it was the client key that was grabbed from a client; and the takedown on github was requesting it to be removed.

Will ask internally if we can’t do something about it; would be nice if we had resources to build a more robust open API support for these sort of projects.

"The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) makes it illegal to circumvent controls that prevent access to copyrighted material."

Specifically, look at https://www.eff.org/issues/coders/revers...g-faq#faq8

And they could consider an API key 'technology protection measures'. It's an unfortunate use of the law, but it seems it's on their side.

Well, the API key is hardcoded as string into the binaries of the apps.
You can just open it with a text editor and read the key in plaintext.

When Crunchyroll says that this is a protection measure, I'm sure passwords are saved unencrypted

Just because its super easy to circumvent does not mean it's not 'technology protection measures.
