Linux [Kodibuntu] Guide: PVR for DVB-T with tvheadend
#1
1. Log in to Lubuntu desktop

In Kodibuntu (that first appeared with Kodi 14.0, Helix) login screen has changed. To log in to Lubuntu desktop, click on the icon that looks like a torn paper in top right corner of the screen, and choose Lubuntu.

Set up backend:

2. Accessing backend

Tvheadend comes preinstalled with Kodibuntu (v14).
Access it using a web browser: http://localhost:9981, default username: kodi, password:kodi.

Assuming you have a compatible tv tuner installed in the computer, it needs to be configured.

3. Selecting tuner device

Go to Configuration -> DVB inputs -> TV adapters -> General

Choose your TV tuner from the dropdown menu. In the example, it's Realtek 2832 (DVB-T).

Make sure that your tuner is able to receive the type of program you want. Many DVB-T tuners are DVB-T *only* and you won't be able to add DVB-C (cable) channels.

4. Enabling device

On Adapter configuration panel tick Enabled. Click Save.

5. Adding multiplexes and channels

DVB-T:

Automatically, using presets

Luckily the networks have presets. On Tools tab, click DVB Network by location.... Choose your region.

Manually

As an alternative you can add multiplexes (channel packs) manually under the Multiplexes tab, using Add mux(es) manually. You need to know at least the Frequency and Bandwidth, scanning is not supported. Click Add.

Make sure you enter the correct value, in Kodibuntu, the value is in kHz. Other variants, like OpenELEC tvheadend may use Hz.

Should the data be correct and be there enough signal Network, Modulation, NetworkID and MuxID are filled automatically- Find the channel(s) in the multiplex on the Services tab.

Image

Map each channel you need to a name in Channel name column. Unmapped channels won't appear in Kodi. Click Save changes. DVB charset, Provider Network are filled automatically.

DVB-C:

TBD - I can't get my Astrometa USB device receive DVB-C yet.

Backend is now set, browser can be closed.

Set up add-on

6. Installing PVR add-on in Linux:

In System Tools -> Synaptic Package Manager click Search, look for tvheadend. Right click on kodi-pvr-tvheadend-hts, select Mark for installation. Press Apply button on the menu. Add-on will be downloaded.

7. Setting up PVR add-on in Kodi

Launch Kodi, and in Settings -> Add-ons -> Disabled add-ons choose Tvheadend HTSP Client. Click Configure, set user/password (by default kodi/kodi). Close configuration window and enable add-on by clicking Enable.

Again in from the main menu go to Settings -> Live TV -> General, tick Enabled. This will make TVappear in main menu.

I am a newbie to Kodi, first tried OpenELEC then gave a try to Kodibuntu. I found it a bit complicated to set up tvheadend, and it took a while to get it working, Especially with hardly any DVB-T reception and non-working DVB-C. XBMC-Kodi name change just made it harder. I hope it can be useful to others as I added all hiccups I met during the process.

Should you have suggestions, post them. There's always room for improvement.

I'm unable to connect to Tvheadend. I've tried to connect using using http://localhost:9981 and http:/IPADDRESS:9981 but I have yet to make a connection. Also, after enabling the TVheadend add-on the PVR service option is still grayed out. Do I need to start the service or something? If so, how?

I have a feeling that Tvheadend does not get installed by default at all times. Try checking if it is installed: Log in to Lubuntu, System Tools -> Synaptic Package Manager, enter tvheadend in the search field. Check if Tvheadend is actually installed (refer to Step 6). If not, install it similar to the client.
