So has anybody got this all together in some reasonable format that could be zipped up? I'm still struggling to get it all to work right and look presentable in XBMC. The race has started and I need to get things working!

Here's a copy of my F1 directory, I've replaced the actual race videos with empty files but you can see how everything is named and set up.

And now a question:
I was only planning on DLing and cataloging the races but I got some of the qualifyings too. But how would I number that episdoe wise?
Any ideas?

My current files for F1 2011 are in three parts : pre race buildup and 2 part race.

In the nfo, I simply put Episode 1 for each of those three files, and they turn up side by side in the order.
In the Win explorer, I use this as syntax : 1101 - Australia - 1.mkv, 1101 - Australia - 2.mkv.... 1102 - Malaysia - 1.mkv

If you have qualifying files, or FP1,2,3.... Try to put them up with - 1, - 2, .... for getting them organized in explorer and use same episode number as 1 throughout in nfo for xbmc...

Looks pretty good to me. There are a few things I'm doing differently, for example I've created F1 as a single show, with each year as a season. It looks like you're doing each year as it's own show. Just personal preference I suppose. Ah, it just clicked for me - this is probably necessary because you can't provide season-specific information where you'd like (ie. plot for a particular year.)

Anyway, I really need to get a handle on all these nfo tags as I'm not sure exactly how they all work. For example, I see <season> and <episode> tags in some of your tvshow.nfo files and I'm not sure what they would do there, I also see <episodeactorsource> in tvshow.nfo so perhaps this is how you populate actors only once up at the show level and get them to propagate down to each episode?

I got the seasons appearing as individual tv shows alright, but I am trying to find a way to nest them all together.....All those seasons create a mess in TV Show library

Then, you put the tvshow.nfo at the "Formula 1" folder level, right?

I have them (tvshow.nfo) in the individual seasons, which currently gives me the flexibility to have plot, actors (drivers) specific to the season. But that takes away possibility of nesting the seasons within one TV Show.

It is possible to have tvshow.nfo at "Formula 1" level and then have something akin to season.nfo at each season level??

As near as I can tell, there's no option for a season.nfo, but that would be a great feature. Not just for sports, but for any show that spans multiple seasons, i.e. from The Wire wiki entry, "The fourth season expanded its scope again to include an examination of the school system. Other major plots include the mayoral race that continues the political storyline begun in season three, and a closer look at Marlo Stanfield's drug gang, which has grown to control most of western Baltimore's trafficking."

One problem is that none of the common TV scraper sources I'm aware of support season-level descriptions, so that info would need to be added to thetvdb.com or whatever, or entered manually.

Regarding <episodeactorsource> I still have no idea what it's for, I noticed it in Hoobie7's tvshow.nfo file.

As far as organization goes, I would put a single tvshow.nfo in the F1 root folder, and just make it a generic plot which would apply to multiple seasons. Mine is from wikipedia, and tells a little about the history of F1. You can either leave the drivers out of tvshow.nfo or update them each year, but either way you should include the drivers in each episode nfo. Then in the first episode of each season you could do the plot you would have included in a season.nfo file. Talk a little about changes in the rules for the new season, etc. This is my plot for Australia, "After the cancellation of the Bahrain F1 GP the opening race of the 2011 FIA Formula One World Championship season takes place at the Albert Park GP Circuit in Melbourne for the QANTAS Australian F1 GP. Making an F1 debut is the 'adjustable rear wing' system in place of the banned double diffusers, adjustable front wings and f-ducts. During the race, drivers will only be able to use the system on a designated overtaking zone of the circuit, to be decided by the race director, when they are within one second of the car in front. The wing returns to its fixed position when drivers apply the brakes. The 'adjustable rear wing' system can be used anywhere anytime during practice and qualifying. The kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) also returns after being used by some teams in 2009. How they work together in improving overtaking opportunities is yet to be seen."

I'm going to do some research and either feature-request the addition of season.nfo or find out how difficult it would be to put the information somewhere and mod a skin to show it.

In other news, I'm working on episode thumbs using Hoobie7's great track maps provided in the OP. The layout isn't quite right as the image is being cropped weirdly for some reason, but once I finish them I'll post a link in case anyone wants them.

Can McLaren turn around their disappointing testing season? Just how many sets of the new Pirelli tyre compounds will teams get through in the race? Will the adjustable rear wing improve the show? And of course, who is where in the pecking order as Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel defend their titles?

Don’t expect a straight answer for the last of those questions. The Albert Park Circuit is notorious for its high rate of attrition, as our Track Notes explain. Just finishing can be an achievement and it isn’t always the best pointer for season form – indeed we’ll probably have to wait until everything settles down as the calendar hits the European leg to get a realistic picture. Never-the-less, Red Bull look like being favourites to retain their crowns in 2011 with Ferrari not looking far behind. McLaren are a different matter, looking off the pace and plagued by reliability issues, who knows if their last minute decision to introduce major changes will pay off and put them back in the hunt. Not that it seems to have dampened Lewis Hamilton’s enthusiasm.

“We can’t hide the fact that testing has been tougher than we expected: our test mileage hasn’t been as high as that of our rivals, nor have we had the outright pace of the fastest cars. Still, I have a good feeling with MP4-26: I like driving our car, I think it will look after its tyres quite well and I understand that we’ll be making further performance steps ahead of this opening race.” - Lewis Hamilton

2011 sees the return of tyre supplier Pirelli to the Formula One fold, bringing with them a new philosophy which has received a mixed response. “We’re aiming for between two and three pit stops in Australia, which in some ways is against our company DNA as our road car tyres are designed to be as durable as possible,” explains Paul Hembery, Pirelli motorsport director. “But Formula One is a very different case, because our remit from the teams and promoter was to provide entertainment.” Assuming that everyone manages to go the distance, that’s a potential of around 75 pitstops which may mix up the strategy and teams and drivers alike will have to think on their toes. Before that though, teams will have to contend with the low grip that Melbourne always offers up at the start of the weekend and a cloudy weekend could see temperatures fluctuate, complicating their plans even further.

Finally there is the adjustable rear wing, which has even got the drivers talking about mutiny, particularly regarding its free-for-all use in qualifying. Will it improve the show? Even it is does, is it artificial? In reality, Melbourne may not be the best place to showcase the system anyway, due to a lack of meaningful straights. Drivers will be able to activate the system in the final turn, 867 metres before Turn 1. However, in practice, they will have to wait until they’re out of the corner. In order to be allowed to do so they will need to be within a second of the car in front as they go into Turn 14 (Stewart).

Ones To Watch
Almost anything goes in the first race of the season, especially on a track as unpredictable as Melbourne – just reaching the finish can be an achievement. However, Jenson Button has both the race craft and the driving style to cope with the worst that Albert Park can throw at the field. He may not have the best car under him as he goes in search of his third Australian Grand Prix victory on the trot but don’t rule out a better than expected finish. Also keep an eye on the no-longer-so-new teams – have they made up ground on the establishment? If not, with the high rate of retirement, Albert Park may actually present the best opportunity for them to get on the score board – if they can get past the 107% qualifying rule first.

Round two and it’s off to Sepang for the Malaysia Grand Prix where Sebastian Vettel will be looking to repeat his victory in last year’s race, continuing from his success in the opening round of the season. Hot on his heels will be Lewis Hamilton and team mate Mark Webber, both yet to win at the Sepang International Circuit, and don’t discount Ferrari just yet.

Some have already written off 2011 as a year of Sebastian Vettel domination and yet Melbourne offers up just a small picture of what the teams will face this year. As one of the hottest races on the calendar, Sepang should provide the first real test of the new Pirelli rubber at high track temperatures – can Red Bull preserve their race tyres as well as their rivals? Of course, that all presumes it stays dry and the forecast suggests rain will affect the race – who will gamble on a wet race set-up?

“Malaysia is the first real track we go to, as Australia is a semi-street circuit,” says Vettel. “It’s hot and rains every day, but the question is when and how much? It will be a tricky one.” Last year a wet qualifying saw Ferrari and McLaren caught out and stuck near the back of the grid, the year before the race finished early in the midst of a storm and before that, well it was pretty dry to be honest. Still, Malaysia has thrown up five different winners in the last five years – although it’s probably safe to rule out a repeat performance from Kimi Raikkonen and Giancarlo Fisichella.

Ones To Watch
With five different teams winning in the last five years, maybe it’s time to forget the form book – heavy rain has regularly mixed up both qualifying and the race and it’s all about calling the strategy, so perhaps the radar is the one to really keep an eye on.

After a disappointing opening race for Mercedes and Ferrari, fans will be looking for signs that it was a one off. “Melbourne is a unique circuit and we know that we will have a much better understanding of our level of performance after the next races,” insists Nico Rosberg. “I think we can surprise people next Sunday. We know that the car is fast from the last test in Barcelona, so now we have to work on proving that potential.” Meanwhile, Team Lotus head in to their home race awaiting the court’s decision on their legal battles with the Malaysian-owned Group Lotus – it should add an extra edge to the weekend as they battle for the hearts of the local fans.

Two wins from two for Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull, could things be going any better for the team? Well the little bit of Australia which is the other side of the garage probably thinks so and that pesky KERS refuses to be everything it is supposed to be cracked up to be. However, while Christian Horner may just self-combust if one more person asks him about flexible front wings, can anyone stop them from making it three out of three?

McLaren would like to think they can. After a brave decision to drop their original exhaust system put them close in Australia, Lewis Hamilton nearly pinched pole in Malaysia. The team’s exhaustive development programme continues apace with new updates, reputedly a new floor and diffuser, set for appraisal ahead of this weekend’s race. Unfortunately, two poor starts from Lewis Hamilton has hampered his progress so far – a big let-off for Vettel as Red Bull have struggled to come to grips with KERS.

“Off the back of two successive podium finishes for the team, we’re not only hopeful of maintaining our finishing record, but of improving it too. We’ve made no secret of our desire to take the fight to Red Bull, and we’re fully aware that stronger opposition will make it harder for them to have a smooth and uninterrupted weekend.”

Elsewhere, a potentially wet qualifying session offers a glimpse of hope for the chasing pack but realistically, it looks like once again they’ll be left to pick up any scraps that come their way – something Renault have been particularly adept at so far in 2011.

Ones To Watch
McLaren made it a one-two finish last year and armed with the Mercedes engine and arguably the strongest KERS on the grid, the long straights may give them an extra edge this weekend. Perhaps Vettel won’t have it all his own way?

After missing the 107% mark by a country mile in Melbourne, Hispania were comfortably inside last weekend. In fact, with their current rate of development, maybe they’re the team to threaten Red Bull’s dominance? (Or maybe not.)
