On my Pi I'm unable to poweroff or even reboot when using newer nightlies (first time was a nightly from June) I just tried again with the newest nightly and it still has the same problem.
After finding out online that the problem was XBMC crashing anytime I hit poweroff or reboot. This caused XBMC to reload without ever powering off or doing a real reboot.
When I revert to 20140423 it works again.
I am running my system using analog cables and no network. (media on sd and flirc remote)
Same problem for my Raspbmc install: reboot or shutdown (also via ssh: sudo reboot or shutdown -h now) randomly fails.
It seems that something hangs at shutdown.
Tried a new 8 GB class 10 SD card and a fresh Raspbmc install and had same behavior, so I think it's a Raspbmc problem and not a XBMC miappa buld issue.
Digging in Raspbmc forums I found this: http://forum.osmc.tv/showthread.php?tid=...t=shutdown. No fix yet.
