@samfisher - please don't feel attacked. I only picked your rubber band version as example and showed up what I don't like about it. I ofc noticed your flat shapes along with the eye candy version, but I explained in my post above why I think it won't work well (just scale the icon down to AppIcon or favicon size (yes, I know it's very small, but ideally the logo should work there as well). In other words - the deformation would have to be more extreme in/for a flat version.
And I agree that the |< might look better in the icon, but for readability I really prefer the no-gap version in the lettering

kerning is the spacing between letters. And with the |< version to me it visually looks like the wording consists of 5 letters instead of 4 (space between | and < is almost identical to the space between the other letters). So at least to me the < belongs more to the O visually then to the | (because the upper/lower whitespace between | and < seems bigger than between < and O) which results in | <O D |
