I don't have any more suggestions, I'm afraid. Using hostnames is generally not recommended and best avoided if possible. Adding the entry in hosts.conf is probably the best solution for now. Avoiding smb for anything serious (nfs is far more reliable) is just about my only other suggestion!
Is it possible to have NFS shares on Windows 10 ?
