Such software is soon depreciated and you are forced to pay for an upgrade every few years just to decrypt and unscramble your new BD titles.

At this time, hardware based players have firmware updates made available as required by new BD decryption schemes.
I've not heard of any hardware based player being depreciated in a similar maner to PC based software players (guess it's just a matter of time).

As i see it the only solution is software based systems built on open source software using title and/or player key files.
The only question is how and where one gets the title/player key files Huh

I use redfox anydvd hd to remove the encryption. This is a onetime purchase, cheaper than powerDVD, and it has a lifetime license (you can buy cheaper, renewable, licences).

This removes all protections, and gives the correct playlist in case of screenpass protection (many playlists to choose from). Needs a windows pc. Once anydvd has done it's thing, you can play the iso on any Kodi (mac, libreelec, rpi, ...).

Such an addon would hopefully negate the need to periodically find keys and it would hopefully be outside of Kodi's responsability.

If you play the encrypted iso, on a windows pc, with anydvd hd installed, then Kodi kan play this iso as if it is ripped (anydvd removes the encryption on the fly).

Disclamer: I live in the EU. It is completely legal here to make a copy (for own use only!) of a dvd/bluray you bought, even if it has copy protection. Might be different in the place you live, please check...

PS: I seriously don't understand why you guys want to play encrypted discs (don't you have 1 windows machine?). Using a ripper such as anydvd (preferred) or dvdfab is so much easier...
Add-on : Bluray iso utils Rewrite of BR_iso_enhancements
Add-on : BR_iso_Enhancements Give theatrical & directors cut from the same bluray iso each their own library entry, use bluray iso's of tv shows as if they are already ripped.
