Thanks, updated post with some more info but its a definite improvement, I think the network timeouts are when the Samba servers sometimes needs to spin-up an array from power down. Downloading the files now.

MKV plays but without any sound (Looks like no audio track detected)
MP4 gave some intermittent sound (In German) with no picture and then crashed Kodi

Still having some issues. I don't understand why Kodi still drops audio packets when I do not have AV Sync enabled, is it because I'm bit streaming the audio?

Clannad has no audio. This is by intention.

Tried again with the file and this time it played perfectly. I have changed the VM from using Q35 chipset emulation to 440FX although it seems unlikely that was involved. The file being played is at the end of the log below.

On my original issue it seems additional logging has turned up the errors, I also noticed CPU-XBMC climbs rom its normal 30% to 50-60% whenever a freeze occurs:

Yes, VDPAU is stuck. Wait, this is a Vmware with gpu passthrough?

You can try upgrading the nvidia driver, but I have no more idea what can be done additionally. Try OpenELEC on the host and see if that works without issues. You also need the /storage/.config/xorg.conf there.

It is KVM/QEMU using gpu pass through. Do AMD GPUs work well? (Thinking of buying an R5-230 to try)

Btw. the driver seems to get stuck, we cannot fix that.

Tried upgrading to 343.26 and that resulted in an Nvidia GPU not supported message and refusal to start X. Going to try a reinstall with the Kodibuntu iso (Although I cant find any release notes on what has changed in the iso).

Well I have just replaced the GT620 with an AMD R5-230. So far it is a mixture, it works better with PCI passthrough but I cant get any HD audio out of it at all. AC3, DTS and PCCM 2.0 work. Multichannel PCM results in high frequency noise through the correct number of channels (Follows however many I set) and HD Bitstreaming just gives no signal. Is there some suggested tweaks I could try? (Running Kodibuntu RC)

Threads gone quiet so I thought I would report my findings using Kodibuntu RC with VFIO PCI Passthrough. AMD works best but I am affected by the strange bug of being unable to playback HD audio unless using 60Hz.

Nvidia GT620:
Wont reboot (Some sort of incompatibility with VFIO, also uses old style interrupts)
All resolutions and bitstreams work
Irritating pausing of video with accompanying VdpDecoderRender long decoding error
Issues playing full rate 7.1 TrueHD

AMD R5-240:
Reboots fine (Uses proper MSI interrupts with VFIO too)
Only 1080P/60 works for HA Audio
No playback pausing so far (Will need a few days to confirm)
Issues playing full rate 7.1 TrueHD
Slightly slower to start playing videos and going to video settings interrupts playback slightly
