switching the tv to 1080i doesn't do anything. Kodi has no support for outputting the frames in a way that an external deinterlacer would be able to do its work.

Where do I enable this? I'm running the Jan 26th nightly build on FireTV. I turned off Mediacodec and have libstagefright on. When I go into the video options while something is playing I don't see any entry for deinterlace like I do if I select software decoding.

Oh and one more thing:
There is still a little shaking in the picture with BOB (Inverted) activated. And the picture loses some of its sharpness.
It's a lot better than with regular BOB - but if there's a way to improve that a little bit on AFTV, I would be very happy.

@Koying: I've noticed that this hasn't been included in the 14.1 release. It would be very nice if you could make a 14.1 build with deinterlacing support to get this included in a stable release.

I'm afraid you'll have to rely on SPMC for having this.
I'll release an Helix version soon.

I just loaded this to my Fire Tv and the difference is Amazing! I am seeing a small jumps (dropping around 14 frames/minute) every once in a while but the interlacing is virtually non existent. I had all but given up on live OTA tv on this box so this is a life saver.
I'm using build 14.1 beta1 which if I read correctly has the latest de-interlacing code. I will try playing around with the settings(currently Hardware acceleration enabled and libstagefright disabled) to see if I can get it to smooth out.
Thank you Koying!! Fantastic work.

Yes, it's been merged in v15, so is in nightlies.
For AFTV and mpeg2, do not forget to disable MediaCodec, which cannot accelerate mpeg2 unfortunately.
